Speakeasy taproom visit

Post by Kealia »

I'm hoping to hit this place up this weekend. They've somewhat recently opened up a new taproom just South of San Francisco and I've always wanted to check them out. They distribute fairly wide and I've loved a number of their beers but it's not the same as getting it from the tap and taking everything in.

For example, I LOVE their Prohibition Ale:
Image

Prohibition Ale is the first beer we bootlegged back in 1997. Anything but traditional and now a GABF winning brew (2013–American Amber/Red Category), Prohibition pours a deep reddish amber hue, with a fluffy tan head that leaves a beautiful lacing on the glass. A lush, complex aroma teases the senses with juicy grapefruit, citrus, pine, spice and candied caramel malts. Mouth-feel is creamy, with a silky, medium body and modest carbonation.

And their IPA is nothing to scoff at:
Image

Big Daddy IPA is a hop-head's delight, a generously dry-hopped yet surprisingly drinkable American-style India Pale Ale. Poured into a standard American pint glass, the beer is a golden straw color, with tight carbonation and a slightly off-white head that leaves a lovely lacing. The aroma is floral, fresh grass, pine needles, grapefruit, and a some subtle notes of fresh bread.

But, what has me really excited is that their taproom actually feels like a Speakeasy (go figure) and they have 12 beers on tap - some of which they don't distribute.

I recently got to try their Vendetta IPA and it is awesome. I have a bomber in the fridge right now:
Image

A cutthroat convergence of Citra and Amarillo hops, this citrus hop bomb explodes on the palate with its resinous hop flavors. Pouring a vibrant orange, with a lovely egg-white foam, the aroma is strinkingly citrus-forward with notes of pink grapefruit, pineapple and orange zest. A clean, sharp bitterness balances with a delicately malty backbone in a symphony of hoppiness.
Style – West Coast India Pale Ale
ABV – 7.6% ABV
IBU – 80 IBU
Malt – Two Row Pale, Vienna, Amber, Caramel
Hops – Apollo, Amarillo, Chinook, Citra

But what I just found on their website that is going to make me drive up there is this one:
Image

Named after the legendary Bureau of Prohibition agent Eliot Ness, Untouchable is a no-holds-barred, ruthless Nelson IPA. Untouchable pours a vibrant copper, with aromas of fresh pine and caramel malt. With intense notes of grapefruit and perfectly crisp sauvignon blanc grapes, this IPA is mouthwateringly juicy with a clean, refreshing finish. Armed with a heavy dose of Nelson Sauvin & Centennial hops, this IPA is simply Untouchable.
Style – Nelson India Pale Ale
ABV – 6.8% ABV
IBU – 65 IBU
Malt – Two Row Pale, Vienna, Chilean Caramel, Belgian Biscuit
Hops – Nelson Sauvin, Apollo, Centennial

I called them today and verified that they have bombers available.

Hopefully my buddy can join me on this trip 'cuz I feel like this ----> :jumpy:

I enjoyed the Big Daddy IPA when I was in California. Good stuff.
Vendetta looks good too.
Let me know if you find any surprises there.Of course, ask your friend for his opinions on any dark beers they might have.

Vendetta is yummy. It's the beer in my avatar right now and I'm looking forward to having it again. The Untouchable uses NS hops which I go cuckoo for.

Had a GREAT time at the tap room but forgot to take any pics, sorry.

The taproom is basically a bar, and it looks just like you would envision a speakeasy to look: dark, quiet, remote, low ceilings....very cool vibe.
They had about 12 beers on tap, some of which you can't buy in bottles and some were wet-hopped versions of the standard offerings.

I stretched myself and tried almost everything. The lager to the saison to the....wait for it........milk stout! I figure if I keep trying them I will either find one that I like, develop a taste for them, or at least put in the effort to do so. (For the record, it tasted like a cup of coffee but more bitter)

The "Untouchbales" that I was so excited to try was just "meh". The buried the Nelson Sauvin under a heavy malt profile and the beer was darker than most IPAs. Must be a fair amount of caramel malts and/or specialty grains in it. It also finished a bit funky. I had my buddy try it (he found some bottles earlier in the week) and he said that taste wasn't there in the bottles so I picked up a bomber to try at home in a few days to compare.

All in all though, a great visit and a good time for sure. They do make solid beers and I'm kicking myself for not getting up there sooner.

Cool Ron, sounds like a great time.

Like you said, sooner or later you'll find a dark beer you like. Then we'll never hear the end of it, it will be "The dark sweet roasty taste lingered on my palate like her kiss from yesterday".

By the way. How do you drink your coffee?

3 dogs, 3 cats here and all is peaceful.

Since it was a milk stout, it was plain milk and not chocolate, right?

Not the same brewery, but a friend of mine was somewhere over the weekend and tried the Anomoly Milk Stout I mentioned a few weeks ago.
