The Bhoy-O's first beer
Well, my son turned 21 yesterday, and I took him to Defiant for his first beer. My brother and his son, who turned 21 last year, were also there, because hey, it's beer, and Dave's buying.
Now, my son, Hal, is somewhat picky when it comes to his food. I've wondered for a while now if he might not be a Supertaster. In any case, he doesn't like a lot of extremes with his food. Nothing too sour or bitter or too flavorful. He doesn't like my barbecue, for example, and it's not even all that extreme; just a little bite to it, but it's got a lot of complex flavors. He doesn't even put ketchup on his burgers and fries. He always orders a plain burger on a bun.
So I figured he wouldn't care much for the taste of beer, and I was right.
He took two sips, and he was pretty much done. He complained of an aftertaste in his throat, and even though I explained that was the finish, and was part of the experience of a good beer, I doubt he'll take the time to acquire a taste for beer. And that's his prerogative. I'm just glad I was able to buy my son his first (and probably only) beer.

Wow, he looks alot like my younger brother. Even the way he drinks.
In the future, I'll just take his beer and spare him the pain.
Happy Birthday to your son.

Happy Birthday to your son, Dave! Maybe brew him up a lite, dry, not heavily hopped small batch to try in the future.

Dave, don't give up hope. My daughter has never even wanted to try beer. She has smelled some of the ones I've drank and totally turned her nose up at them as "disgusting"! The other day I got the following text which completely surprised me.
Like I said there's alway hope. Maybe he just needs to find the right beer for his taste.

Louie, you only half-succeeded or she wouldn't have had the Bud Light...
Dave's son will just cultivate his tastes into mixed drinks that taste like he wants.

"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain

Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

Rick, I know at first I cringed when I saw that but the fact that she even tried it was a step in the right direction. I told her I would brew the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Stout that I have a recipe for and have her try that and she was willing to try that too.RickBeer wrote:Louie, you only half-succeeded or she wouldn't have had the Bud Light...
