Facebook Check Ins

Post by D_Rabbit »

I am assuming some of you have facebook and on occasion when you go someplace new and fun you use the Check-In feature to let friends and family know you are someplace awesome, such as disney, sports game or your favorite watering hole.

I was planning a while back to make my home a check in point with my brewery name, Rabbit Hole Brewery, but opted to wait a bit since we were moving around quite a bit over the last 18 months. The other day my wife says to me, I gave our home a check-in name!

My first thought was WTF!!!! She just screwed up my awesome plans and probably named it something stupid and girly!! So I went on my phone as she tagged me on the post so I could see the name of our home check-in location. WHO HAS THE BEST WIFE!!?? THIS GUY!! Check in Locaiton: Rabbit Hole Brewery!! :) :barman:

I barely use Facebook, only for a neighborhood group and not often. I never use any social media to let people know where I'm at, or where I'm not. I have a friend that constantly puts his travel plans on social media, so EVERYONE knows he is not home. I don't get that at all.

If I want to post on social media something like "I liked ABC Brewery" or "It's great in Hawaii" I post it AFTER I'm back home.
I have over 9,000 posts on "another forum", which means absolutely nothing. Mr. Beer January 2014 Brewer of the Month with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it...

I have my home marked as Mr. Rufus Brewing Co for when I check into a beer on Untappd. If I'm not drinking my own beer, I'll check into my home marked as the Litter Box.

I agree with RickBeer, I even turned off the feature in my ipad that makes it announce to the world where I'm at(more importantly announcing I'm not home).
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

Ya, Ive never understood why people post their locations while they are out either, especially the people posting their vacation photos while they are there. Nothing says "rob me please" like posting a picture of yourself on a beach 1,000 miles away.

Well, those who dumb enough to not set restrictions definitely deserve to be robbed. My features only allow my friends to see my posts (which I update and delete regularly if I do not have contact with them personally for a while). It does not allow the friends of my friends friend see what i'm posting so therefore I do use the check in feature on occasion. I do not tend to use it though while I am on vacation, like you mentioned.

I've never used the check-in feature and never would have thought to name my home as my own brewery, it's a great idea. My brother mentioned that a co-worker of his likes to do check-ins while out on the road passing by mental hospitals or prisons/jails. It has given me the idea to do the same.

I have to think a would-be crook would be frustrated in trying to find Rabbit Hole Brewery. I don't use check-in myself, but checking in at a synonym for your own home could be an interesting trap for anyone who is trying to catch you away from home.

When I do check in somewhere I use the application Foresquare/Swarm on my phone and sometimes link to FaceBook. When you check in using that app to check in to some restaurants. bars, stores sometimes they will have posted specials to get a free item or even money back if you use a certain credit card. My wife and I went out to dinner one time and I started to check in at the restaurant and got upset with my because she didn't want everyone "knowing our business", but I checked in anyway and found that If I used my AmEx card we would get a $25 credit towards our meal. Now she makes sure I check in where ever we go!

Would be dangerous. PETA would find it, then post "FedoraDave SLAUGHTERS innocent rodents while horrified resident Nora Jones looks on".

Just set fresh traps in the attic yesterday for meeces, and traps in the yard in some tunnels. DIE RODENTS, DIE!
