Orange Bitter Peel - SMASH

Have a question about how to do a BIAB or have a technique that you want to share. Just brew it!

Orange Bitter Peel - SMASH

Post by charlieb »

I'm doing a SMASH this weekend. I was digging through my 'stuff' and found some orange bitter peel and thought 'hmmm.......'.

I'm thinking about dropping a little in to give a small hint of orange. I've never used it before so not too sure about results.
Recipes I've seen tend to use it in conjunction with wheat/coriander belgian whites and whatever.

Anyways maybe what I'm doing won't work but I wanted to see if anyone has any experience or opinion. Maybe adding orange peel to a simple ale is stupid :laugh

Recipe:

12# Maris Otter
1oz Palisade
Wyeast 1056

Thanks

I would not. Palisade is mainly a finishing hop. It has "a smooth hop flavor with a fruity, non-citrusy aroma more characteristic of english style Pale ales" With you grain bill and yeast choice I think it would take away from those. Save the bitter orange peel for when you do a smash with a Belgium or Sasion yeast.

I would agree with Bob. I did a blonde with Palisade and it was yummy.

That hop deserves all the attention IMHO.
