I went to a steak chain tonight. I was surprised to see they had local brews on 2 taps. I tried each one, and was disappointed. They each had the same kind of funk that immediately identified it as, I don’t know how to describe it but most larger breweries don’t have it in their beer. Not cidery, but kind of like it oxidized or something. Not pleasant. My friend who doesn’t drink and is therefore a completely unbiased taster gave me her best “bad beer face” and agreed mine is much better and, in her words, “not muddled". It was a bittersweet revelation that I may be spoiled by my own efforts. I had prime rib and a glass of wine. It went down great, but I’m a beer girl at heart.

You'd be surprised how many places rarely clean their taps and lines and this makes a HUGE difference. I go to a pub that cleans their lines weekly. Most places do so only once or twice a year. That's sad.
But it's likely just a matter of ignorance. Most small businesses have no idea what needs to be done.
Those local breweries should get a tip from someone <wink-wink> letting them know their beer is suffering.

Remember this though...... They brew for the masses ! What we enjoy as a good beer does not mean the
masses enjoy it. Some of my friends would rather have dog pee ( natty light ) than my beer that has some flavor to it. BL could be right on the cleanliness issue also. But, then again , the masses might think that is a good beer.

I hear you Alb. It is a great moment to realize that you can brew as good as you can buy. But it is disappointing to be unable to buy something decent to go with dinner.
BeerLord, I know just what you mean. I've resolved to talk to my friend, manager of two bar/grills. Their lines are so bad that I only drink bottled beer there. Other craft drinkers have said they won't even go in. It won't be an easy thing, but someone has to tell her.

I agree with Paul; it may be merely that the lines need cleaning. The same thing happened to me a few years back at the bowling lanes bar. I always used to have a couple pints of Newcastle Brown Ale on league night, but one night it just tasted nasty, and I commented to the bartender about it. She was savvy enough to realize the lines probably needed cleaning, and the next week, all was copacetic with the Newcs.
