Ye Olde Devil Nut Brown Ale

Post by Bluejaye »

This might be the wrong place for this, but what is a Nut Brown ale? Is there a commercial example out there I could try, because I find the name intriquing? Does it actually taste like nuts or something? :?:

I don't profess to be an expert at official "types" of beers, but the term "nut brown" refers to the color, not the taste. Why some brown ales do have a "nutty" component, it's generally provided by a grain, not nuts.

There are American Brown ales and English Brown Ales.

In general they are maltier than most beers. The links I provided allow you to see commercial types, see how they are rated, etc. I happen to like Moosedrool and liked New Holland Cabin Fever when I tried it. I think Newcastle is ok, but it doesn't have a lot of flavor.
I have over 9,000 posts on "another forum", which means absolutely nothing. Mr. Beer January 2014 Brewer of the Month with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it...

Thanks! I'll have to stop by the store, I'm sure they must have a Short's or Bell's that I can pick up as a single or a mixed 6-pack, since my store carries a lot of local brews.

But just your description of it being maltier sounds tasty. Might just have to place a BD order to try it myself.

I'm guessing its the same HME as the old MrB Englisman's Nut Brown.

It was very good, so I'll likely get it again at some point.

I've brewed it straight up. While not among my most favorites, not a big brown ale fan, it's a good beer.
