New to the Brew

Hello all, my name is William and I'm new to the home brewing world.

Right off, I'm going to anger many as I say, I actually don't like beer....at all, despite trying many. I do however love cider and that is why I'm here. Well, that and because my future son in law sent me a BD fermentor for Christmas. So I'm going to take the challenge and see if I can get to a point where I make something drinkable. I plan on starting off with a BD Cider kit that I've ordered and see how that goes to get used to things and then I might attempt my own batch from scratch.

I've been doing my research and ordering the various bits and pieces that I need. Hoping to attempt making the first batch this coming weekend.

Aside form that, I'm an easy going guy and this seems like an easy going place. Just don't kill me for not being a beer fan :D

My big brother never liked beer either. We used to pick on him about that - "I dont liiiiikkkkkeeee beer" in a whining voice. As a poor colllege student, Busch, Blatz, etc were the norm. When he graduated he would try other things than American lagers and found out it wasnt beer he hated, it was the style. He is now a stout and porter man although warming up to things like IPAs. So there is hope for you yet! :lol:

On the other hand, I also enjoy making wines, meads, and ciders so that proves there is plenty of room for all of us.

Welcome to the Borg William! Glad you found us!!

Nothing wrong with not liking beer (aside from the obvious :whistle: ). We won't hold it against you for long...

As long as you are fermenting a tasty beverage, you'll fit right in. Ask questions when you need to and let us know how the cider turns out! :barman:

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. The cider section here is exactly why I joined. I stalked the forum for a week or so before announcing myself today.

To add to the "I don't like beer" intro, when I say I've tried many, I mean, over the last 20 years, I've tried just about every beer I've come across both foreign and domestic. Be it, stout as mentioned, IPA, even some home brews. They just all taste the same to me for some reason. Hell, I don't like wine either, but for some reason, Cider and I are good buddies.

So in hopes of finding some more common ground, I'm into VWs and Audi's, I do my own mechanical work, I've been on motorcycles since I was 5 and since I'm in the IT profession, I have a love of most things computerized. Hopefully some of that will make up for my shameful dislike of beer.

I'll be sure to post up how the first batch goes. I'm sure I'll screw something up in a comical way, so it should get some laughs.

Also, as to where in NW Ga I am, I'm in the Bartow Co/city of Cartersville area. About half way between Atlanta and Chattanooga Tn.

Welcome...glad that you found us here. You're in for one hell of ride, so sit back and enjoy. The brewing hobby is quite fun. And yes, cider falls into that category!!!

We accept all types here. (Wait until you get to know Joechianti and Inkleg, you'll understand) Please share some of your cider adventures, as I'm considering branching out.
I do my own mechanical work too, but only on Chrysler cars (my '79 300) and boat diesels (1968 Perkins 4-107). The boat in my avatar pic is mine. I also fix anything in the house, and I'm retired from police work.

Welcome aBorg! So what if you don't like beer. We're all about homebrewing as a hobby, not the product! Yes, almost all of us are into it because of beer, but that doesn't mean we don't embrace other fermented beverages! Hope you enjoy your stay here, and happy brewing :)

John, I think we will get along just fine. I'm still a long ways off from retirement, but I must say that is a very nice boat you have there. Also, while I'm into the German variety of cars now, I cut my teeth on Fords and various firetrucks (that's for the diesel tie in). Haven't had the pleasure of working on a perkins, but both my current Vw Jetta and the wifes A3 are TDi's. So, oil burners are present and accounted for. As for the C-300, that's a nice ride, I remember seeing a few of those at the drag strip back when my father and I raced our bikes.


As for cider adventures, I got hooked on it when I was a little kid and would steal sips of cider at my family's big labor day gatherings in Oil City. As an adult in the south I found there wasn't much in the way of Cider at the time. Eventually, Stongbow, WoodCuck and a few others came about and it was good times for me. I prefer dry ciders like Strongbow/Crispin, though lately the wife and I have been making trips to Chicago to visit our daughter and I hit the jackpot. Original Sin which is an elderberry cider and Mckenzie's Black Cherry are on my hot list at the moment.

Now I hope to start playing around and making my own.

Welcome to the Borg! While I love beer (and wine, liqueurs, spirits, cordials, moonshine...), cider has always held a special place in my heart. I always have at least one fermenter chugging away with my latest experiment. Cheers!

I remember "making" hard cider as a kid. We would just leave local cider out of the fridge and it would ferment. I remember noting that it cleared as it fermented, and trying to drink it while it was still good. Now I'm doing something similar with beer.
