Couldn't stay away. ..

Hey, inkleg... bottles available today of the funked old ale (Embrace the Funk: Indomitus Dolium). I picked up some... if you want some of them, great. If not, no worries (more for me)...

The Indomitus Dolium 12oz bottles were $25 for a six. You can take as many or as few as you want (not sure how many are left at the brewery and/or if they will be available in a few weeks). I'll keep an eye out, but that might be the best I do for funk beers, unless they have a surprise bottle release next week (which is how the releases usually work). Nothing funky available in bottles at the brewery besides the Indomitus Dolium at the moment (for non-funky, they also have 12oz bottles of the base beers, and bombers of Preservation Ale, Americana Festival Ale, and Sue), and they don't yet distribute the funky bottles, so what's at the brewery is it (at least commercially). There is (as of now) four kegs each of the single barrel versions of Indomitus Dolium and the Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Aged Brett Saison (which are both wonderful) on tap at the taproom, and I also noted that Jackalope has two sours up (which, I believe, would be their first sours, so who knows), and also one up at Black Abbey. We'll see if that holds up for the next two weeks.

Yazoo just started bottling funk at the beginning of '14 (before that it was taproom only, but they installed a dedicated sour bottling line in '14), and they've been relatively small batches thus far, so usually they sell out the day they are released. Now that they are releasing in the 12oz bottles and in larger quantities, they tend to stick around for a few weeks tops, but it's still not likely to find more than one out at a given time. It's possible that I may be able to find a Deux Rogues flanders red from someone, but it was a 600 bomber lottery release, and the following Grand Cru and Cherry versions (the latter the GABF winner) were 200 bomber releases, so they are a bit hard to come by. Even harder are these examples... Unoaked 2014 Brett Saison was 185 bottles, Saison Colada was 165 bottles (already popped mine), the 2013 Brett Saison was only 24 bottles, and the Sour Session 1 was also only 24 bottles, and had to be consumed in the taproom. Fortunately they have since moved into their new barrel facility, so they have many more barrels now, and quantities should increase a great deal later this year. I know the Deux Rogues release is supposed to be something like four times bigger this year, for instance. So... not a lot to get right now, but I have friends, so who knows...

I figured on bringing a Deux Rogues or something from my cellar if you all are interested, figuring we could toast up with it when everyone is in town (we could also open up a Preservation Ale or some homebrew for those that don't dig the funk... ;) )...

I hope to learn to enjoy sours on this trip as it's not been my cup of tea. Maybe this is something I can use as a starting point.

If you don't mind please pick up a few bottles of what ever you might run across. We can always go shopping while we're there.

I'm going to bring some bottles of my first sour for folks to try. Death Sour ECY20 plain and with Raspberries.

I wasn't a fan of Sours at first either. But someone on HBT had started a thread asking for help. Folks listed sours in the shallow (less sour) end of the pool and went toward the deep end (more sour) end. I made a list and just started trying them. It helped a lot. I'll see if I can find it.
Lindermans Kriek Lambics are a good place to start.

The take about a year to mature, so start brewing early.

My thoughts are that I can like them enough to brew a few. But, what I've tried so far, wasn't something I'd take my clothes off for. I want a sour that can make me questions only making 75% IPA's this year.
