This is what I did on Monday...

I can't imagine even playing in the Super Bowl is as exciting as it was to attack this baby. This pic was taken just minutes before we got there. The neighbor seen smoke coming from the windows, called 911, grabbed her cell-phone as, by the time she got back to the window this is what it turned into. No one home. The owners winter in Arizona so nothing was lost that couldn't be replaced.

I was on the first truck in and on the nozzle for the initial attack. Since it's already coming out of the windows the initial attack is always an exterior attack. But by the time we got there and set up that baby was COOKING! I had it knocked down it less than two minutes.

It's been a few years since I got to make the initial attack on a structure fire. But suddenly I've done it twice now in the last two months (we've had quite a rash of house fires this winter). This is the first time we've gotten pics of the fire from before we arrived. I've gotten too old and too fat to do this much longer but I'm one of the few firefighters on the department (volunteer) that is in town during the day.

Amazes me how anyone can have two homes and NOT have the ability to monitor certain things remotely - temperature, water leak, smoke detectors. We are now caring for my in-law's home as they are in assisted living. First thing I did was put in an alarm that monitors all of the above (as well as burglary, and could monitor CO but no one home). Not only does central monitoring ensure that a fire alarm gets immediate response (perhaps in this case saving the structure), but central monitoring of burglary/fire alarms provides homeowner's insurance discounts.

Nowadays you can buy a wireless alarm system with cellular communication, install it yourself (no wires, few screws), and get monitoring without a contract for $14.99 a month (with higher options) AND turn off monitoring (if you desire) when you're back living in the home.

People who winter (or summer) elsewhere should make sure that neighbors know so they can inform the fire department that there is no one in the home, so a interior search doesn't need to be made.

In that picture it looks like the fire is coming up from underneath the house very weird. Glad no one was home.

From my mouth to God's ears... I hope that NEVER happens to us; its my worst fear for BB2 to try and get out in a hurry.

All hail Police, Fire and EMS.

I can't give any particulars but that was a three season porch. When I first got to the scene I thought the basement was burning and had made it's way to the ground floor.

Cool pics, Mash. Winter-time hiking is something LOML and I want to take up again when we get back into a little better shape.
