First Bottle Bomb

Post by duff »

About 3AM this morning I was rudely woken by a loud crash bang sound. So I went down stairs and found the dog downstairs in the kitchen with his ball stuck under the table. I thought he must have run into the table hard enough to shake the leaves that are stored in it. Well this evening I went into the basement to get something and it smelled like beer... so I looked around and what did I find?

I had one batch of foamers that never really gushed but they would just slowly foam. But I finished them up quickly because I was worried about bottle bombs. Turns out my room mate had pulled a few out for the post garage sale grill and party this summer. When the garage sale stuff got moved back into the basement somehow one bottle got stuck on the shelf with the rest of the garage sale stuff. Mostly it just got on the shelves and the a few drops on some boxes. There were a couple of books that got some drips on it as well but all in all I was pretty lucky. I didn't realize they would blow quite that big.

I wasn't married very long when the 2 cases of beer I had under OUR BED decided to go off one night. First, I had to pull my arse out of my mouth and find my heart and start it beating again but then when I realized I wasn't in a war zone, it was actually kind of funny.

They can be quite spectacular when they go off. Somewhere I have a picture of a piece of glass embedded in the ceiling.

Do I want to know why you stored beer under the bed?

I heard a rumor on some other thread that some folks here like to drink beer while they have sex... Kaboom!

As I recall, sex had nothing to do with it. It was just a lack of space in a very small apartment and we had an antique bed that was pretty high off the ground and we stored as much stuff as possible under it.
Luckily, the cases had covers on them (they were the old longneck bottles in original cases) and that protected things a bit but likely also caused more bottles to explode.
Ah, the good ole days.

I had an infection in one batch of beer and filled up a bunch of 12 ouncers and two 32 ounce glass growlers. Around 2AM we woke up to what sounded like a portable TV being thrown through a window. Seems two of the growlers let loose and exploded, there was beer everywhere inside an unused bathtub with glass shower doors. Cleanup was pretty easy because of where I had kept the bottles although there was a lot of broken glass to deal with.

Bummer. I've been dealing with some gushers myself. I think I may be safe(er) from bottle bombs as I use flip tops. IF too mush pressure builds, they just vent it off and reseal. I've actually heard it happen once when I was moving a bottle from the conditioning cabinet to the fridge. Sorry for your loss.
