Pliny the Elder

Post by Banjo-guy »

I just ordered the Austin Homebrew Pliny partial mash kit. I read over this whole thread in prep. I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead.

It seems like you guys wanted more dry hopping than the kit included.
I'll be asking for some advice.
I'm crossing over to the dark side. ( hops)

Welcome to the Hop side. We have beer and cookies.
Let's us know what's involved in the PM. We will be glad to help any way we can. Pliny is a really good beer.

Sweet....another comes over to the dark side. I'll have to go back and read some of this too. It's been awhile since I made this.

My first try wasn't as great as I wanted due to fermentation temp problems but my second try was enjoyable. There are a massive amount of dry hops in the recipe I used. When I do it again, I might even secondary for the dry hops.
The only down side is the loss of beerage due to the hops but it's a great beer, IMO and one any hop fan should brew. Good luck. If you don't like it, I'll take em!

Be very careful........once you cross over, it's hard to go back, almost impossible.
And if for some reason this doesn't go well, I'll send you my address

Good luck.

Great thread!

I'd like to offer up my tasting services to the members who have brewed this beer. Since Pliny seems to be difficult to get in many parts of the country, feel free to send me a bottle or two of your brew and I will write up a comparison vs. actual Pliny the Elder from Russian River. Its a win-win right? :D  :woot:

(of course I guess I could send some Pliny to you to compare for yourself, but where is the fun in that? )

Hey Taz, whereabouts are you located? Up North close to RR or more South in the Bay Area?

As much as I'd love to take you up on this Taz, I had a 4 month old bottle of my Pliny clone score 44 at the Suwanee Beer Fest. So I'm good for now, but thanks. ;)

Just kidding. When I brew it again I'll PM you for an address. Lord knows, I've shipped a few beers over the years.

I can honestly say that Ink's Pliny could be the best homebrewed beer I ever tasted.......and believe me, I've tasted some yummy home brews from this lot on the Borg.

I may have to give this one a shot. This recipe looks great! I have never had a Pliny but have heard a lot about it!
