Welcome! My first batch wasn't the best either but I liked it because I had made it. You will make better beer as you go along. Like others have suggested, I would make a few kits, straight up to improve your techniques and get a baseline for what to expect. I went from there to adding steeping grains to kits, and then eventually to all grain. Like all of us (well me for sure), my first batch wasn't store quality by any means. But I had brewed it and that made all the difference in the world. Then I found this group of guys (and gals) and it has been a downhill ride ever since, with beer at the end.

The oatmeal stout seems to be coming along nicely. Had a pretty active fermentation after about 12 hours, but slowed down substantially within about 24 and the trub really started accumulating. Gonna let it sit for a couple weeks before I bottle. Should have gotten a hydrometer before, but it's on the list. Thanks again for all the input.
