Fruit Salad

Post by BlackDuck »

I just realized that I never posted the recipe for my Fruit Salad Session IPA that I took to Nashville. I was originally worried that it would be tough to make again since it used a couple of hops that were hard to find. I searched today and found some more on AIH and MoreBeer, so I bought what I needed and will do this again soon. In fact, I'm going to send it to the Ohio State Fair Homebrew Competition in May as an IPA and see what happens. This may well be my favorite recipe that I've done so far, and I know that a few others enjoy it also.

I am making one change to this recipe from the first. And that is using 1 ounce of German Mandarina Bavaria in the dry hop instead of the German Hull Melon. Which is exactly the way I wanted to brew it the first time around, but the LHBS didn't have enough Mandarina the first time. I'm just glad I found the hops to do it again.

Yeah I'd have to ordwer them the only one my LHBS carries is the citra. :laugh

I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain

Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

Farmhouse usually has those hops. I got me 4 oz of the Melon to try in something later. Might pair with Galaxy and some Belma to go spring tropical.
Knowing that I'll never get my beer to taste like this one, I probably won't even try. One's you've had the best, you have to admit defeat. :wow:

Thanks for the recipe Chris. That was one really tasty beer.

I had the German Mandarina Bavaria in a SMaSH recipe at a brewery and didn't care for it on it's own. But, that's hard to even judge a hop by because there are so many variables in how much they used for bittering, flavor, etc.

What I can say is that before that beer I'd never heard of these. And you are the first person I know to actually use them!

And yeah, that was a damn fine beer. I'm not surprised you are re-brewing it.

It blew me away. Add in the 30 minute boil and it's unreal. I sometimes crave it and am afraid to brew it as I know it will never be as good as the first time.
I might try it and muck up with other hops as well such as Belma, Calypso etc. But I'm keeping Citra (sorry Jeff, you cat piss wuss)

Oh I like cat piss, it's the onion/garlic I get from Citra I don't care for.

It's amazing how we can taste the same beer and get different tastes all at the same time. But, to me, more proof there is a God. :flame:

Thanks for the compliments guys. But, I got an email from AIH this afternoon, said they were out of stock of the Hull Melon. Weird, since they were listed as in stock when I ordered them. But it did say that they were expecting more in next week and would hold my shipment to send everything at once. We'll see....the last I heard, the grower was out of them. Hopefully they get them in.

Niko Brew has some but it looks like they only sell it in pounds for $25. Northern Brewer has some for $3.99 (wow) and can likely get it to you in a few days depending on when you're brewing it.

EDIT: nope NB is out now too. Dayum. This one must be hot, hot, hot. I have only 4 ounces for a brew I'm doing soon and now wish I would have gotten more.

Brewed this again today. Blew my OG a bit. Predicted was 1.043 and I measured 1.049. And my liquid volumes were even on the mark too. The only thing that I did different this time was stir the grains half way through the mash. Kind of surprising that one stir would pick up that much efficiency.

No biggie though, even with that number, and if the FG is at predicted the ABV will still be low at 5.1%. Looked, smelled and tasted pretty much like the first time.

I think the reason I do so well with a BIAB is stirring every 15 minutes.
