An immersion blender and a Borgie saved my life

Post by Brewbirds »

Hello friends. Been horribly sick for a while there but I think I'm gonna make it.

Started feeling poorly about a month ago and it finally got so bad I couldn't stand up longer than two minutes - my heart started pounding, my eyes pulsed, burning back pain, shortness of breath, fatigue on steroids - scary stuff. BB2 and I thought a heart attack or stroke was at the door knocking.

I wouldn't go to ER because there wasn't anyone to take care of my brother so we called and got him signed up for a home health care service to come and feed him etc.

Meanwhile BB2 looked my symptoms up (good ole Google :p ) and said it sounded like low blood pressure might be the problem; whuh? I'm on high BP meds.

Sure enough I got out the BP meter and my BP was 78/57 holy cr-p. :o

I'd started a D.A.S.H. diet to get off the pills and it worked so well I got back to a normal BP and promptly crashed through the floor.

As soon as I quit taking the meds my pressure started to come back up but it took a long, long time. Once it got up to 90ish/70ish I was able to move around a bit but I was pretty zapped.

I could not put any solid food in my mouth, my brain would not let me chew though I was able to keep BB2 fed some how and he was a trooper throughout.

Enter LindseyWinstead's baby kale pesto thread from a while back and an immersion blender I just purchased to make said recipe and I survived off of a smoothie like concoction of that pesto (which I had thankfully made already), some super greens, carrots simmered in chicken stock and grated Parmesan pureed until it looked not unlike pond scum. Oh yeah, and the microwave gets some credit for my recovery as well because that stuff WAS NOT going down cold.

I called my life saving elixir Super Goo. Bless you for posting your foodie threads LW keep up the good work ( I've got one for you coming soon).

So my old goal, get off the BP meds accomplished, I now need to set some new ones.

I am so emaciated that I look like a cast away from an island with no coconuts so my first goal is to not have to tie my pants on with a rope. :D

Another goal I'm working on is doubling everything I cook and filling the freezer with ready to heat and eat meals that an aide can fix for BB2 if I'm ever out of action again.

We have both been trying to get primary care doctors but new patient appointments are months out - a goal out of our control. :x

Anyway, that's my absence in a large nut shell.

Going to see what all I've been missing on the Borg now; guess I should start way back when I went AWOL and move forward. I'll check for a Paddy's Day thread first.

Missed you guys.

Sorry for your issues but, and forgive me for stating the obvious.....PLEASE make sure you continue to see a doc and do what they say. Life is too short...and you need to take care of yourself for others as well.

Wow. I was wondering what could possibly have kept you so absent for so long. Glad you're on the mend. I have to say, that DASH diet must be amazing to go from high blood pressure problems all the way to low blood pressure problems. Stay healthy and hope to hear lots more from you again soon.

Glad you're feeling better. I read the thread with much trepidation, figuring somewhere you would blame me - heart pounding (check), shortness of breath (check). Then I saw the rest and realized I wasn't at fault.

Glad you're back, we need a resident smart-as&.

Thanks for all the support guys.

We were both going "what the heck???". I'd quit smoking a while back, we decided to eat a healthier diet; I mean I give up my chicken fried steaks and the bacon and eggs for breakfast and THEN my health goes down the toilet!! What is up with that.

@ RickB I really wanted to sign on and get a raft of wiseacre off of you; I just knew it would get my heart beat back into rhythm but I had to use every scrap of grit. I'll try and hook up with you next time I'm going to croak though I promise.

@ RedBeered- so BB2 calls to see if we move the appointment up for the doctor and they said if we tried to change it we wouldn't get in until April.
I mean JEEZ the (supposed) quality of health care was one of the reasons we chose to move here.

Gotta love the POTUS healthcare reforms.
