I went though the stout section of Designing Great Beers and used the grain ratios that were compiled from the winning beers. Ray Daniels doesn't actually cover American Stouts but I took a few ideas from a BYO article by J. Zainasheff about stouts.
This has a much more complex grain bill than I have ever used before. Is cascade a good match for this? Does this recipe work?
This is for the RCE brew that we are still working on. We are going add cherry to it. I might skip the cherry and add coffee and perhaps chocolate.

Don't think I've seen black barley.....sounds interesting. Yep, with those hops, it does look like an American Stout.

Looks good
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."
