What a disaster!

So last Saturday night I got a scary call at work. My neighbor called to tell me that a drunk driver had hit my house. Wife and kid were okay but very shaken. I ran home from work to find a drunk doing the walk for the cops in my driveway with his work truck embedded in my living room.

Thankfully my wife was giving my daughter a bath or they likely would have injured or killed by all the wood and glass shrapnel. Had I had the day off my spot on the couch would have been fatal.

The engineer says I will likely get a new roof, new garage, totally replace shared wall between house and garage, new front wall/window, redone floors.

If you ever wondered why you pay so much insurance this why.

Thank God your all ok. That's scary stuff. I've seen a car go through plate glass window at a local establishment, and it was ugly in there. I'm glad none of you were in that room.

You should consider a claim against his insurance to make sure ALL your costs are covered including any lost wages, all meals, and any inconvenience to you. If he had no insurance, go after him personally. Don't forget pain and suffering, i.e. Living with the in-laws. Make sure that criminal charges are brought against him, and that they don't plead him down and let him off - happens very often to drunk drivers if no one is hurt.

Once you notify his insurance company that you're going to make a claim, verify how long you have to make that claim - it should be around 3 years. Keep track of ALL your costs - including mileage to/from the hotel, meals (as I said), etc. Even things like "we couldn't go on vacation because we had to secure the house". Normally you will be able to make one claim - i.e. you need to accumulate all your costs before making the claim, that's why the 3 year period. Remember, he has to make you WHOLE.

I have a relative that was injured by a golf cart driver. Costs include inability to play golf for 2 years, reduced ability to play golf (or anything else) for the rest of their life, etc.

Once you make your claim, if they won't pay then seek an attorney.

I'm not pushing litigation, nor frivolous claims, but you are the injured party and you need to be made whole by this drunk driver. And ensure that he is removed from the road.

True words. Things can be replaced; people can't. I'm glad no one was hurt. And I agree with Rick that this guy should be paying through the nose. Drunk driving is inexcusable.

Oh man, that really sucks! But as was said, your family is safe.
I hope his insurance was valid but either way, I hope you get back to normal soon.

Yikes! Glad to hear everyone is ok. As others have said, things can be replaced, and make sure as Rick said that you get EVERYTHING back to the way it was. Don't discount anything. Scary for sure but again, glad you and yours are fine.

Adding my "glad everybody is OK" post.

I have zero tolerance for drunk drivers. This could easily have ended very badly for many people and I hope the offender is dealt with appropriately.

I'll reiterate what Rick said. Although working auto and homeowners insurance claims I would recommend going through your insurance policy. It will be quicker. After that your carrier will go after this guy for you so you won't incur the cost of a lawyer.... And let's face it, your insuranc carrier has a team of lawyers for this is exact reason.

Through your policy they should take care of long term housing, lost wages, injuries or dr visits to verify all are ok and a lot of other things you wouldn't know about without speaking with them.

Thank goodness everyone is ok. So often these types of crashes have much worse outcomes. Maybe you can finagle a new brewing room out of this!
