Bathroom Renovation
I have been trying to convince my wife to let me renovate the basement bathroom in to a fermentation/beer storage closet since we moved in to the new place back in July of 2014. I have slowly been putting more a more brewing stuff in there since we never use the bathroom. It is the 2 of us and there are 4 damn bathrooms in the house! WHO NEEDS THAT MANY TOILETS! People apparently shit a lot in VA, especially this close to DC.......THANK YOU! I'm here all day!
Anyways, while we were in the basement today I opened the door to show her the fermenter happily chugging away and she saw a few other items I put in there over the past few weeks. 5 kegs and about 250lbs of bulk grain that I am storing for a friend while his house gets renovated. She caved when she saw it and said screw it and gave me the green light to remove the toilet and pedestal sink and put in a utility sink and some shelving for my specialty grains and other general brewing equipment.
Been doing some research so I can get this going before she changes her mind. Will remove the toilet and cap the hole so we can put a toilet back in there when we are ready to sell. Plan on mounting my conical fermenter in there on some studs, it is the fast rack fermenter that I bought almost a year ago and haven't used yet! Will also put a small shelf in there to put the fermenting or secondary carboys so that they don't have to ferment on the ground. It will make kegging so much easier now too instead of lugging the carboy up a flight of stairs to the main level so I can have access to water. Really pumped about this! Back to the drawing board!
Here are a few pics of the bathroom now. Will post some new ones as I get this project moving along.

Re: Bathroom Renovation
Best thing about the room..... I have made beer in September, November, February and April now and it stays a perfect 64 degrees year round! I tried to get my saison above 68 by putting a heating pad under it and it still wouldn't get above it! PERFECT for year round fermenting!

Re: Bathroom Renovation
Replacing the toilet with a wall mounted conical puts a whole new picture in my mind of "yeast dumping".

Once you get your wife on-board with a project or purchase, you are good to go, after they think it was their idea in the first placeD_Rabbit wrote:I have been trying to convince my wife to let me renovate the basement bathroom in to a fermentation/beer storage closet since we moved in to the new place back in July of 2014.

Re: Bathroom Renovation
Good use of the space. You certainly don't need all those toilets, and looking ahead to when/if you put the place on the market is a smart move.
Me, I'm in the process of getting our main bathroom renovated -- not for a brew closet, but for a decent bathroom. The place is a wreck, done in Early Brady Bunch, and with more leaks than the Watergate investigation. We've been talking about it for years, and now we're finally going to pull the trigger and get this done, as it's long overdue. Sadly, this will make our crapper the nicest room in the house.

We just finished renovating our master bath. Now the crapper is the nicest room in the house. Only temporarily though. Kitchen renovation is next in SWMBO's list.
Re: Bathroom Renovation
Spent some time this weekend getting a few things done in the bathroom/beer closet. Got the toilet and sink out. Plugged up the toilet hole. For some reason my drain wasn't a standard size.... story of my life, nothing is ever the normal and i spend multiple hours and several trips to lowes to get the right stuff! Finally got it plugged today though and spent a little time putting together the shelf and moving a few things around. Decided to call it a night when I snapped a bolt while securing the mounts for my conical fermenter. Will have to move it up or down a few inches to clear that bolt, once I decide to go back to the store this week. Feel like I spent most of my weekend wandering around Home Depot and Lowes looking for a crapper plug!
Here are a few photos, not much but it will be cozy once completed

Got some new bolts and mounted the conical today It is shaping up. Was going to mount some shelving too but decided that I didn't like the wall wire shelving unit I bought so I am going to return it and get something different. Little each day! Oh, and decided that instead of a double bowl laundry sink in the room I would get 1 large sink that is a good enough size to fit a full keg laying down in it. It will also give us an area to bath the dogs if we decide we want to do that too.

Re: Bathroom Renovation
Just don't let some drunk friend go in there. They may think that's some sort of weird European toilet.
Re: Bathroom Renovation
I love that fermenter on the wall. Looks like it's all starting to take shape! Very nice.
