It made our local Cleveland NBC news this morning, but I think they went more off of yesterday's news file and not current.

It was in our local news as well, but it made all the national news orgs too, ie CNN, Fox etc. Its a pretty unusual thing.

I sure hope everyone has been accounted for and all are getting the anti toxin in time.

Things are looking positive. Grandma is doing better. She was sitting up today and eating cream of wheat. Still not sure when she will be released. She is still very weak. And the doctors are recommending some physical therapy to help improve the strength. Her vision is still blurred and doubling a little bit, but is improving.

Grandpa was released this afternoon. Turns out he never had it. They admitted him the other day for observation because his voice was raspy and he was a little short of breath. And since he has shown no other signs and his condition has not gotten any worse, they decided to release him. So that's really good news.

But everyone is still nervous because the health department is trying to figure out the source of it. They have stated that they have approximately 20 items that they are concentrating on and testing. They think that the source is some sort home grown and/or home canned goods. The health department has visited the home of everyone that brought food to the pot luck, which included Grandma's home. And they have taken goods from most of those homes for testing. I think they are supposed to make an announcement tomorrow on the results of those tests.

It is not unusual - in fact it is very usual - for an elderly person to require physical therapy after a hospital stay, or even going into a rehabilitation facility for a period of time. There is a severe impact on muscles and the human skeleton that can be very long lasting. I've seen things that have said for every week it requires a month of rehab. The good news is that Medicare will cover the first 100 days in a rehab facility (I can speak from experience with my in-laws).

The worst enemy of an elderly person is the hospital. In addition to the impact to them physically by laying in bed all day, there is a distinct possibility that due to exposure to germs and illnesses in the hospital that they contract something else. Even a visit to the ER can result in further illness for them. Things like C Diff, which my mother in-law contracted during a stay. Highly contagious, not very pleasant.

The sooner she gets out of there, the better. My father in-law was in for a period for dehydration (a big issue with the elderly), and his was pretty massive dehydration (hurt when he went to the bathroom, so he solved that by not drinking fluids for days...). Hospital massively over hydrated him, when he came home he was almost an invalid for weeks. Went back in after a few weeks, came out, this time we put him into a rehab facility where he remained for around 3 weeks. Joined by his wife part way through as she got a bladder infection (very common in the elderly) and then C Diff in the hospital. After rehab and maybe 6 weeks of physical therapy my father in-law is still not back to where he was pre-illness, and this is almost 2 years later - and he never will be. Hospitalization at an advanced age has a huge impact on them, and is often not recoverable from a physical strength and endurance standpoint.

Studies have been done on ICU patients over years showing that even 2 years later they aren't back to where they were (and that's not just elderly).

I hope both of your grandparents make a full recovery.

Really good news...they released Grandma late yesterday afternoon. I think my wife is planning on bringing them dinner tomorrow night so we'll visit for a little while.

Your right alb...I'm sure it will be rough on whoever brought the dish. The health department announced yesterday that they have narrowed it down to 4 different varieties of potato salad, vegetable soup, and macaroni salad. But they also said that all of them have tested preliminarily positive. And since they got all the samples from the trash can, there could very well be cross contamination. So that leads me to beleive that if they are all positive, they may not be able to pin it on one dish.
