Pro/Am Hand Surgery (Not for the Squeamish)

Post by John Sand »

So, I got a great new rigging knife for Christmas. Super sharp, it cuts lines with a single stroke. I was working with it on the boat today. I slipped and cut my pinky. It hurt, I yelled. The blood flow let me know I would need stitches. I quickly went below and broke out the first aid kit. The cut was on the outside of the palm face of my left hand. It ran along the finger between the joints. I wasn't neat, but I wrapped it tightly with gauze, and taped it. Then I noticed a parallel cut on my ring finger. Hmm. Well, I rowed ashore and drove to the hospital. After the requisite forms and waiting, a PA came over to examine my cuts. On unwrapping my fingers, my suspicions were confirmed. I'd cut right through my pinky from side to side, and stabbed my ring finger. The PA, then the doctor, came and looked. They were impressed. They tested my ability to bend my fingers. The ring finger would, the pinky would not. The amateur surgery over, they phoned a hand surgeon. He came and cut the inside of my finger, joining the existing cuts to access the severed tendon. It took him a long time, but he fished the ends and stitched them them together. I got to watch, it was pretty cool. Then he used a little soldering iron (or something) and cauterized the incisions. No sailing or boat work for a few weeks. I can't even drink if I take these painkillers. And I really wanted a beer. Maybe I should post this in the "I deserve a homebrew..." thread.

Oh man, I'm very sorry to hear about your accident. Your sure went out of your way to get attention. :)
Seriously, take it easy and follow the doctors orders. And until you finish the painkillers, I'll handle the drinking of homebrews for you. I just kind like that.

As horrid as that accident is, isn't it amazing how they can put things like this back together now? You'll probably get most, if not all of the mobility back.

OUCH! Good thing someone was on staff at the time that could perform that type of procedure. You would have had people thinking you were some snooty sort while drinking your coffee or beer with your pinky standing at attention. Follow the Dr's orders and let it heal completely!
