From Blonde Ale to APA

Post by FedoraDave »

You might remember my daughter asked me to brew some beer for their rehearsal dinner. Based on the menu choices, I felt a saison and an APA would pair with everything very well.

I already have a saison recipe that I'm pleased with, but I wanted to make a more customized APA. As I was drinking a White Panama this week, it occurred to me that I liked the malt bill very much, and if I substituted Cascade and Centennial for the Liberty and Hallertau, I'd have a pretty good APA working for me. It's a pretty simple recipe, as follows. This is for a 2.5 gallon batch.

5# Two Row
0.5# Biscuit
0.25# Carapils

0.25 oz Centennial - 60 minutes
0.25 oz Cascade - 60 minutes
0.25 oz Cascade - 20 minutes
0.25 oz Centennial - 7 minutes
0.25 oz Cascade - 7 minutes
0.25 oz Cascade - Dry hop

I'll be using the Mangrove Jack Workhorse M10 dry yeast, which I like in a Pale Ale.

I made a draft of this in Brewtoad, and the numbers look pretty good for the APA category, and I think the hops will really make it pop without overshadowing a pleasant, slightly sweet malt bill.
