Cans are better in many ways. They protect the beer from light exposure for example. So no skunked beer. So craft beer from a can might be better then the same craft beer from a bottle depending on storage conditions.

Technology has also come a long way, and the current cans are lined with something that removes the possibility of that metallic taste ruining your drinking experience.

A few weeks ago I made beer-can chicken (the only way to cook a whole roasting chicken, IMO), and rather than resort to Modelo, as in the past, I was pleased to see cans from a local micro. So I had five cans of good craft beer to drink after using one to cook the bird.

I didn't know they lined them with something. I thought it was all about pouring them in a glass. I thought you get the metallic taste by picking up the scent of the can as you drink. So by pouring the beer in a glass first, you don't have the can near your nose as you drink, and the metallic flavor never happens.

The second article says the cans have been lined with plastic since 1935. This being the case, would they not release toxins when used in cooking?

canned beer

I understand that the stuff they line the cans with is made from water so it's very food safe and does a great job of keeping any metal taste from leeching into the beer.

My personal experience with craft beer in cans is that there has never been any metallic taste in the beer, so it's always just been left up to my opinion on whether or not I like the flavor of the beer!

Not only is the canning technology so much better now than it was in the past, but I think I read an article a while back where they mentioned that the investment on the canning line and equipment is cheaper than a bottling line and equipment, not sure if that's true or not. But if it is, that would mean it would be easier for some of the small craft breweries to venture out to retail sales.

I'd like to add that with the advent of the Crowler, it's easier to take beer home fresh from the source while making great use of the next-generation canning equipment and helping bring costs down (which brings prices down!)

I was a skeptic. I'd read that craft beer was better in cans, but I knew that cans are cheaper, easier to ship and recycle, better for the seller. So I wondered, are they using PR to justify a business decision. So I bought Sam Adams in a can, and tried it side by side with a bottle. The can was decidedly better. I did not check the dates, but it makes sense that with no light and no air in the can, the beer will stay fresh. Heady Topper is canned, it is rated among the best in the country. Their can is even labelled: Drink from the can. (I still pour it into a glass) Anyway, I'm on board with the can.

No question that craft beer from cans is the way to go. Linus had a poll up when they were expanding and needed to replace their tiny bottling line (which, ironically, is the exact same model they recently bought for the funk house)... cans or bottles? I was definitely on 'team can', though a lot of the misconceptions about can beer ruled the anti-can votes. Linus ultimately went with bottles, though I would much rather have Yazoo pool beer. Locally I can get Jackalope and Fat Bottom pool cans in town, and will soon be able to get Turtle Anarchy cans, so I guess that's not bad. And there are a ton of great craft cans (Westbrook Gose will likely be my beach beer next week), so the pool is always well stocked...

There's a local brewery back where my Mom lives that brews in cans, my brother recently brought a 4-pack and shared one with me :urock:. It was pretty good and I didn't notice any metal or aluminum taste.
