Accidentally skunked a beer.

Post by teutonic terror »

Yep I did. :(

Did it while sitting on the patio earlier talking with the wife.
Had a Hersbrucker Ale in a clear glass and the sunshine is really bright today, before I could finish it it was skunked!
Amazing how fast it happened. Couldn't have been no more than five minutes. I could actually taste the difference with each sip!

Thanks for listening!

Bet that was a real Dayamz moment for you... now you'll have to invest in Brown Mugs...

I took an LBK outside to wash out when both sinks were full once and it skunked it the time it took to rinse out the trub, fortunately the smell didn't stick. It doesn't take long at all.

That's what surprised me, the LBK isn't clear and I wasn't in full sun.

We've sat outside with a glass of beer a bunch of times and got no skunking. Weird

Wife is still a smoker and I'm a ex 2 pack a day junkie!
That's why I was out with her, and I LOVE to listen to her! :)
Just gotta remember to keep my brewski outta the direct sunlight or get a brown mug!
Wonder if it's the type of hops or will any hops cause skunking?

I once read where it only takes 30 seconds of direct sunlight to skunk a beer enough to detect it by taste.

I was pondering this over the last week, how long does it take to skunk a beer? It's never happened to me in a mug, but was thinking more about in the bottle? Didn't want to sacrifice a beer or two to figure it out though...

I do too but generally I am sitting in the shade where the ultra violate radiation is cut down significantly. Notice you don't get a sunburn if you stay in the shade. I have had it happen one time on a really cool day when I was sitting in the sun though.

I find this whole thread interesting because a year or two ago I had reported that I had read somewhere that beer can skunk in 30 seconds. And a couple of individuals on the old forum threw that back in my face in a sarcastic way for a few months after I made the post. All I did was report what I had read. I never said it was skunked beyond drink-ability or quantify how much it was skunked in any other way.

i've read the same thing. still i imagined that would be in a very strict set of circumstances. to hear that it actually happened that quick to somebody is astounding.
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."
