Re: What a disaster!
Glad to hear everyone's OK - what a scary situation!
Some nearby neighbors of mine had a very large tree fall on their house during a night-time storm a few years ago. They have two young daughters, and the tree destroyed the bedroom of one of the girls. By sheer luck, earlier in the night, she had decided to get up and go sleep in her sister's room, and wasn't in her room when the tree fell.
Your story is similar, jp. Things that make you think "what if..."
So thankful this jerk's stupidity didn't result in any bodily harm.

I'm not particularly crazy (IMO), and I don't rock-climb. It's just the name of a video game I used to like to play, back in the 80's.

Oh my gosh so glad that your family is ok!
Re: What a disaster!
Wow, that is scary. Happy nobody got hurt (family) in that wreck. But going to suck you can't stay in your house for a while, while it's being repaired.

And don't forget to claim the 10 cases of the finest single malt scotch you had in the garage. As well as the 100 pounds of lobster tails in the freezer out there in the garage, which were right next to the 200 pounds of Omaha steaks. I can testify that I saw them just the day before the accident, for a small share of the replacement products.

Also, don't start rebuilding until you consider what you might do next with the house. For example, if you were talking about an addition, now might be the time given that things are "opened up", no pun intended.

Re: What a disaster!
Several years ago our Fire Department was called to a similar scene. But this one was the end of a high speed chase. The county road the cops were chasing the guy down tee-d right in front of a house. The guy never even hit the brakes. Tried to make the corner but at an estimated 100 mph that was a no-go. Came off the curb, flew up about three feet off the ground, cleared the front steps, went through the front porch, through the living room, through the dining room and took out the wall separating the dining room from the kitchen. Actually knocked the house off the foundation.
The family that lived there was out of town for the night or else they would have been enjoying the evening in the front porch and been killed. I've never seen such a mess and I've been to a few tornado stricken areas.

Re: What a disaster!
After about 80 days I finally got moved back into my house. We had to have an engineer come up with a plan for our repairs. 45K+ is repairs! And I couldn't brew that whole damn time, cause I was in an apartment that restricted alcohol container size.
I've posted a few recipes that I brewed before the accident, and finally sampled after coming home.

Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain.
Quaintest thoughts — queerest fancies,
Come to life and fade away:
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today.

Re: What a disaster!
You may want to consider a claim against the drunk driver's insurance company for things other than the physical damage to your home. For one, the emotional stress of living with the in-laws for 80 days... I think that's worth at least $1 million dollars.

Re: What a disaster!
If he went through his insurance carrier for the repairs than that is already in process. They will go after his insurance carrier and if he doesn't have insurance they will go after him direct. He may be able to take him to civil court as well for the additional stress and burden this has put on his family. Could be considered emotional distress.RickBeer wrote:You may want to consider a claim against the drunk driver's insurance company for things other than the physical damage to your home.
