More beer!

Ok sorry I went there. But now that that's out of the way. WTF? I've heard of this, but it only sucked it half way up the tube. Not completely out of the jug. At least it was just water and not Star-San, so it should be ok? Definitely not the beer you were hoping for though. Measure, prime, bottle and keep us informed. Again Chris, sorry this happened.

I have no explanation on how that could have happened if you didn't have some radical temperature or air pressure (barometric) change. Did you have some big storm system roll through recently?

I hope it turns out to be "more beer" and still good.

I've read where fast temperature changes cause pressure changes and its possible 'some' exchange could happen but I would never believe it would be so much.
I use Star San in my overflow jug and set it up much the same way. I'm scratching my head on this one.

I am scratching my head on this too. I can see where fast fermentation could do this. But this one has been done fermenting for more than a week. It's already finished, been through a 5 day dry hop, 3 days of gradual temperature and 3 days at a stable 35 degrees. I swear there is something living in that fridge that dumped the water in.

Just finished transferring to the bottling bucket. I tasted a sample and it wasn't bad. Light in color, but it had pleny of aroma and flavor still. Not quite as much as Ron's original, but not bad at all. I thought the water would have diluted it more than it actually did. So far, I think it will end up OK. Fingers crossed until it's fully carbed and conditioned.

So that happened over one night after already being at 35 for 3 days? That is weird.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I'm hoping this turns out good for you Chris.

Yup...happened within a 24 hour time frame after it was stable at 35 for 3 days. Only thing I can figure is that it was a little stormy and unsettled for a few days right at this time. I have to wonder if a front came through and the barometric pressure changed. And since the fridge was a sealed environment, it turned into a pressure chamber. Then when the water sucked back up the tube, and it made it past the elbow at the top, then it became a reverse siphon and sucked all the water into the carboy. It is weird, but I don't think it completely runined the batch. Fingers crossed.

It's actaully almost 3 weeks since bottled. I bottled on 6/18, so Thursday is 3 weeks. SO....thanks for the reminder. I put one in the fridge. I'll try it Thursday or Friday and see if it's carbed properly, which I'm sure it is. Then the mass transfer of all 56 bottles to the fridge for a righteous life of cold storage until properly consumed.

EDIT...Ooops. My dates in my notes had a little typo. I noted that I bottled on the 18th and put that date on the top of the caps, but I really bottled on the 20th. Oh well....I leave the bottle in the fridge and still drink in a couple of days.

So here is the very first pour. Only in the fridge for two days, so it's a little cloudy. Carb is perfect. White frothy head. Aroma is so nice. Good hop flavor. Just a little thin in the mouthfeel, but what do you expect when a 1/2 gallon of water finds its way in.
