Yes, it bubbles like a regular boil once it gets going. And you can see steam venting from under the foil on the flask (if you cover it with foil), or out the stopper if you use one of those and an airlock.

Gonna give that a try next time, that way if it boils over it doesn't scorch the cook top. As a " double boiler " it would seem to be a bit more steadily controlled on an electric cooktop.

The caramelized layer of skin started to peel off last nite. Good thing I kept the skin hydrated this would have hurt much more.

Oh man, that looks very, very painful.
I'm gonna drink a beer for ya just so that you know I feel your pain.

Really not as bad as it looks, Friday morning it felt like a good sunburn. Kept Neosporin on it and slept with one of those neoprene medical gloves on so it wouldn't get aggravated. The new skin is a bit tender though.

Drink more, less pain.
Well, that's a start.
Sorry to hear you had to go thru this.

Damn Steve, that's gonna be the best beer EVER!
Guess what you'll need to do to replicate it next time you brew it. After all ever brew step matters.
But really, Ouch that smarts.

I done fingered it out! did my first starter ever without a boil over or a burn!
Yeast energizer question though, just picked up a bottle of energizer, says use 1/2 tsp per gallon, for my 1.2 liter starter I used about 1/4 of 1/4 tsp. first time using, even if it wasn't enough it is more than I ever used before. Can you use too much?

Probably not, I just toss in about 1/4 teaspoon and RDWHAHB.
And glad no burns, Im still cringing over that picture.

I've read that too much is not good but you'd have to really over do it. I read that a guy used 5 teaspoons in 5 gallons and had no bad affects.

It spinning away as we speak, yes glad no burns this time myself! The back of the hand is almost all the same color now and finally stopped peeling. Didn't think to find out about the yeast energizer before I started, about 5 minutes left I remembered, figured some is better than none.
