Which Malting group?
My Home Brew Club is having their yearly grain buy. These are the malting groups the we can get grain from.
Is there one better than the other?
Will I be able to tell a difference at my brewing level?
What are your experiences with these malts, good or bad?
I know pricing is different, but so is weight. We will get a 15% discount after 40 bags. So most come out within a few dollars of each other by the end. I'm not interested in making cheaper beer, but better beer.
I plan on getting at least one bag of,
2-Row Pale Ale malt
Maris Otter
Vienna
and either Pilsner or Bohemian Pilsner.
Thanks in advance for the input.

My favorite 'go to' is the Gambrinus Pale. My LHBS goes through a lot of these, so whenever I buy one, the package date is usually shown as a couple of days or a week before I take it home. 55lb sack for +/- $35.00 (after my club member discount). Very consistent. I would bet that Weyermann Vienna would be nice also.

IIRC, isn't Fawcett considered the "gold standard" for Maris Otter?

I'm not particularly crazy (IMO), and I don't rock-climb. It's just the name of a video game I used to like to play, back in the 80's.

I like Great Western and Rahr and get those whenever I can. Wish I could get Gambrinus here.

I use Avangard mostly and had used Malteurop prior (my LHBS doesn't carry it anymore). I've had good success with both. We're not making this any easier, are we?

Re: Which Malting group?
You could get one of each...Since you need Marris Otter, get one from each malting group that has it available and so on and so on with the other types you need.
Then you could really make a good comparison....I know, you can call me a smartass!!!

Re: Which Malting group?
I usually ask for Dingmans Pilsen Malt but often end up mashing Weyermann Pilsner Malt. For North American grains I use Briess 2-Row Pale and Crystal malts.

No you're not, but it seems all the maltsers put out a quality product that people make great beer with.swenocha wrote:We're not making this any easier, are we?

Re: Which Malting group?
So.....after much research and debate I've decided upon a sack of each one of these.
Best Malz for Pilsen and Vienna
Thomas Fawcett for Maris Otter
Briess Pale Ale Malt
I should probably get a sack of Munich too while I'm at it, shouldn't I.
