Room for one more forum-less brewer?

Take a minute to introduce yourself to the Borg and tell us what's brewing. You can ask questions here too!

Room for one more forum-less brewer?

Post by JSSTR8 »

Yet another bastard child of the Mr.BeerFans forum. I have been brewing for about 7 years. I do mostly all grain with an igloo mash tun and turkey fryer. However (like Jon) I backed the Grainfather and received it last week. I was going to post a review when I brew in a few weeks on our old site, but will post here if everyone is interested.
I will apologize ahead of time since I tend to come and go. I stay busy with work (new promotion), grad school, 5 year old, and restoring an old 82 diesel VW Westy. Even when I'm not posting though I am usually lurking to see if I have anything substantial to add to the discussion. I look forward to learning from everyone's experiences and hope to have a few of my own that may help. In the semi-near future I will be doing a brew room build and a bar build; yes two separate builds, my wife is awesome.

Welcome JSSTR8 and I hope you can spend more time here discussing your Grainfather. Would love to see it in action.
As for as adding to the conversation, I gave that up a long time ago and spout off crap all the time. There's not much here you can say to hurt anyone and there's all types of personalities and we all get along.

It's a Borg Cube. If Louie got us the good version, then we have room for up to 179,000 drones. Even the crappiest cubes have room for 5,000.

So yeah, we got room.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome, glad to see you over here!

I should post some pics of my grainfather--I've only given it a water test, and I have some solidified DME (damn humidity!), so my first batch in it might be an extract batch.

But it seems to have no trouble with boiling water, though I'm contemplating insulating it with reflectrix--not so much for better efficiency (though that's part of it), but mostly so I don't burn myself bumping into it!

Hmmm...maybe I'll finally download tapatalk like every forum I visit on my phone wants me to do. Does it make it easier to post pictures?

Anyway, good to see you again. I hope a few others who didn't find out in time do manage to make it over.

I haven't done much with it yet Jon. I was trying to do some water tests, but my boy wanted to go out and eat. I got to mash temps and that was it. I will post when I get some more info.
I have two yeast starters going right now and hope to brew next weekend. I will do a boil test before then. I should also have some "grain" numbers to compared them too.
Still unsure about my sparge method. I think I will just heat the sparge water in another pot, line it with a sack, and dunk the cylinder in to do a batch sparge. Then consolidate that back to the Grainfather. Defeats the purpose of a one vessel system, but o'well. Once I get a heater and temp control for the extra pot, I may consider fly sparging.
