SO approved a chest freezer

Post by GUI_Center »

Just moved recently and I was finally able to convince the SO to let me get a chest freezer. Originially I wanted it in the apartment, but since we have an outdoor storage closet that is big enough and sits right off the door to the patio it was approved! I have a 2 tap kegerator that I built so for now the freezer will only be used to ferment with my STC-1000 box I built. I did buy one big enough that will allow me to convert it to a 4-6 tap keezer at a later time if I wanted. I went with the Frigidaire 7.35 cu. ft. (FFFC07M1QW) model. It has very similar specs to this one so I could max it out with 6 kegs and a 5 lb co2 tank with a collar.

Very nice! Congrats :) I'm hoping to expand to a similar sized unit soon so that I can churn out more beer faster!

Excellent. I know the feeling with the SO. I just got my compact chest freezer set up for fermentation with my Johnson controller.

Congrats!

Got an 18 cu. ft. Fridge in the basement with 2 kegs and a 5 lb tnk...

Use the extra fridge space for bottles and the occasional watermelon...

The extra freezer space is for meats, freeze pops for the kids and hops....

The hops take precedence... :o

Since I have already taken over part of the kitchen and part of another room in the house...

Well, the chest freezer is out... For now...

I love my keezer, it can hold 3 kegs, plus some bottles and a fermenter. I remember perusing through tons of photos to get ideas on the look I wanted. Post some pics when you start converting and building a collar - I'd love to see how it turns out.

This is a long term goal and won't happen until we move again I suspect. For now it will just be a fermentation chamber but I bought it in prep of converting at some point in the future.

I first used a swamp cooler and then switched to the cool brewing fermentation bag. I was not happy with either of those as I could not change the ice out often enough due to work and the temperature would swing too much. Recently I have been commandeering my kegerator for a week to ferment but it was never ideal. Glad I get have a dedicated fermentation chamber.

Congrats GUI! Being able to keep fermentation temps stable is a big step to making better beer. Especially when it is low maintenance like a freezer. Don't think I could ever go back to the frozen water bottle method.

The Cool Fermentation bag worked great for me but the trick is to start with a cooler wort. The first 12 hours were key and it greatly helped my beers but in the end, the freezer won out for me too. Just too easy and foolproof.

For me it worked better than swamp cooler but in the end the temperature swings were too much and I didn't like the outcome. I was gone every weekday morning by 7:30 and home around 5:30 so the ice bottles would melt too much. If I put a few extra bottles in the morning the temp would drop too much. I couldn't find a happy medium.

Chest freezer was just delivered.

Heck, why not just knock down that brick wall and build a nano brewery. I'm great with destruction.....I'll help.
That's pretty much how mine looks. I have mine in a utility room that houses my water heater. Spacing isn't perfect for getting around but it works.
Get yourself some Eva-Dry dehumidifiers and you're golden.

I do plan to cold crash now that I can.

Also, I had purchased an Eva-Dry dehumidifier in preparation, so it's already in.
