Spare Parts...What and How Many???

Have a question on how to keg your beer or just want some tips on bottling! Don't stick a cork in it until you ask the Borg!

Spare Parts...What and How Many???

Post by BlackDuck »

I'm finally diving into kegging. I'll be ordering my system from kegconnection.com. I'm going to get a basic two faucet kit with picnic taps with ball lock kegs. I read about some of you guys having spare parts on hand.

So, what parts should I add on to the order and how many of each?

You could likely wait a bit it you have new parts but I have a supply of different size o-rings, a few gas and liquid disconnects, some lube (a tube will last 3 times forever). I also have a bag of hose clamps and a spare gas hose. Probably a few other parts. I didn't get these all at once, just collected some parts each time I needed a few things and am hopefully prepared for most of whatever comes my way.
You will love kegging and saving your time from bottling.

Chris, I agree with Paul.

Get it a little at a time...

Start with the lube.... As Paul says, it lasts and lasts...

Then 1 gas plastic connect and 1 spare hose and a couple of clamps.

(If your connector attaches to the hose with a threaded connector instead of a push on connection, get 1 or 2 of the nylon or plastic washers that go in there 'cause they're small... Trust me.)

Then 1 liquid connect and a couple of pairs o-rings for the connects and 1 for the lid for EACH KEG.

There should also be a nylon disk with a hole in it that goes between the tank and regulator and acts as a washer... Good to have one of those in case that connection develops a leak.

Then get a couple of replacement poppets... 2 or 4 should do for quite a while.

I bought used kegs and changed the connect o-rings and lid o-rings right out of the gate.
Haven't had to change them since (about 2.5 years now)

And I just added the 2 replacement poppets which I have not needed to put in service yet...
But will change soon just because... Will probably keep the old ones as emergency spares.

Here's what I did change though...

When you dissasemble the gas and liquid plastic connectors, there's a spring and washer in there...
Lost a washer down the drain I suspect so I just bought 2 of those washers 'cause I'm a dummy...

Thanks guys. I just got off the phone with one of the guys at KegConnection. The kegs come with a set of replacement O-rings already. He suggested the keg lube and a few extra poppets to have on hand right away. That's it. So it sounds like he with both of you guys. Won't need too much right away. Order being placed in 3, 2, 1.....

I forgot to mention poppets and just got 4 more this past weekend. I've rarely needed to change them but if you have a small leak or the spring gets worn, it's cheap insurance.
The folks at kegconnection are great to work with and ship fast too.

Just think if you would have held off a few days bottling the 4KC Belgian Strong, you could be drinking it next weekend.
