Inkleg, I gotta ask you

Actually, anyone else who is in the Georgia area, which I think includes JJ, too, and no doubt some others.

But anyway, I was perusing the craft beer selections at a liquor store on the way back from the LHBS on Tuesday, and I was intrigued by a chocolate peanut butter porter. I'm not a real big fan of porters and stouts, but this intrigued me, and I thought it might be a good dessert beer. Or a novelty, if nothing else, so I bought a sixer.

It's pretty good, actually. Not overwhelming chocolate or peanut flavor, but they are there. And the malt bill is roasty and pleasant. Good mouthfeel, and the flavors improve as it warms. So nice job, really.

It's from Terrapin Beer Co., Athens, GA.

Any thoughts, comments, or background on this brewery? Has anyone had any of their other styles? If so, how did they compare? I like discovering craft breweries that are new to me, especially if they're thinking outside the box, and not just throwing Ultra-Hoppy IPAs out there to please the masses.

I've only had their Hopsecutioner IPA. It's a good IPA, one that I would buy again.

Based on the IPA I wouldn't hesitate to try other styles from them.

Duck, I agree that I would be willing to try other styles from this house based on this one beer. Not that they would become a go-to or anything, but I can also say I wouldn't try styles from certain houses based on a couple of their styles (*cough*ConeyIsland*cough*).

Terrapin Brewery puts out a pretty solid line of beers. I have picked up a keg of their Hopsecutioner IPA to have on tap. I'm excited to see they are expanding their distribution.
They also do Collaborations and Side Projects that are nice to try. I can't say I like all of these, not that they are bad beers, just not my style. But I still will get a bottle of everything they put out just to try it.

Good to know! Thanks, Jeff, and thanks, Dan! I don't know how available any of their other stuff will be in my area (or, rather, the area near my LHBS, which is northern New Jersey, and a good 45 minute drive from Casa Dave-Guy), but if I see their IPA or something else, I won't hesitate to give it a try. This is one of the things the Borg is for; letting folks know what a certain brewery is offering, and what the lowdown is.

So, to return the favor, if you ever get a chance to sample anything from Saranac, I'd recommend it! They don't go for a lot of the more exotic variations on styles, like spiced rum imperial stout, or anything, but their Pale Ales, IPAs, and other offerings are solid and consistent. Good session beers, and good to pair with a meal, IMO. New York State represents once again!

I'll vouch for Saranac as well...

Solid beers and a mixer 12 (4 Legacy IPA's, 4 Dry Hopped IPA's and 4 Pilsners) runs $12 'round here.

Brewed in the F.X. Matt Brewery in Utica, NY (Home of the original Simon Pure!)

I believe they have also done some contract brewing for other companies from time to time.

Yep. Just good beers coming out of that place. The Legacy IPA is particularly good.

The recreation Ale is REALLY good
And the Hi5 IPA
Everything Ive had from Terrapin has been real good

I've enjoyed several Terrapin beers. For those that keep score, they are now less than 25% owned by MillerCoors, but it seemed to be a good deal for all and they have stayed independent. RecreationAle is a good session IPA (and in cans... pool beer!), and Moo-Hoo (what Dave speaks of) and Wake-n-Bake, along with their variants, are pretty much all great. I agree that Side Projects are hit and miss.

Oh, and they've been featured on Walking Dead a few times...

Now there is even a Terrapin Walking Dead beer...
