Recipe Collaboration Exchange - Fall 2015

Post by FedoraDave »

It's that time of year again! I'm putting together another Recipe Collaboration Exchange.

Those of you who know the drill, sign up! Don't forget to include your level of experience.

Those of you who are unfamiliar with the RCE, here's how it works:

This is an opportunity to work with another brewer, via the magic of the internet. You sign up in this thread, and I pair you up with another signee, and you communicate via email or the Borg's Private Messaging, and you put together a recipe, and then you each brew that beer, and share your results on the message board. You don't have to have a particular skill level (I'll explain that later), and you don't have to brew your beer at the same time as your partner. You just have to work together to create a recipe.

The idea is to maybe stretch your comfort zone a bit, by using a new ingredient, or a new process, or trying a new style. And you get to know a fellow Borg member a little better.

So sign up below, and include your level of experience, using this handy-dandy guideline:

LEVEL 1 - Only made beer from HME kits, such as Mr. Beer or BrewDemon

LEVEL 2 - Made beer with HME kits, enhanced with steeping grains, malt extracts, and/or hops additions

LEVEL 3 - Made beer with unhopped extracts, grain additions, hop additions. Formulated original recipes

LEVEL 4 - Made beer with all grain, whether BIAB or traditional mash methods.

I will make every effort to pair people with similar experience levels (I used to pair a more experienced brewer with a less experienced brewer, but that became problematic), and if anyone with Level 3 or 4 experience is willing to work with a 1 or 2 brewer, please let me know.

Sign-up will close on September 27, and I'll create a new thread to announce the pairings. If any more clarification is needed on how this works, just ask. It's pretty simple, though.

Count me in. I am level 4, but use other techniques too based on what I'm brewing. I would gladly work with someone at a lower level, to think through efficient ways to get good results. For folks who are new to RCE, I have had a great time in previous ones, and had interesting experiences trying innovative things.

If anyone is interested in going from extract only to SMEIBB style kitchen partial mashes BB2 and I could help with planning and recipe developement etc. but I don't know when we would be able to actually brew the resulting beer since we are in housing limbo.

If JJ signs up, I will make sure you're NOT paired! Not out of spite or anything, but once is random, twice is a real coincidence, three times is a conspiracy!

Thanks for the responses, everyone! Let's keep 'em coming, and let's get some other levels in here; it's a great way to expand your horizons, your techniques, your ingredients, and your expertise.

Also, as a side note, I appreciate people noting BIAB in their responses, but any AG recipe can be done BIAB or mash tun. I always make my RCE batches in 2.5 gallons, even if the recipe as formulated is for 5 gallons; I just cut the ingredients in half, and I do BIAB for my 2.5ers, rather than mashing in a tun, as I do for my fivers. It's all flexible, and it's all good, and if someone wants to learn BIAB, well, being paired with an experienced "bagger" would be great!

I think this is going to be a fun RCE! Let's get more participants from every level!

What is SMEIBB? I saw a thread on it and read through it. It was probably defined somewhere in the thread, but I never saw the definition.
