How do you dry your tubing?

Post by Kealia »

I seem to come across this "problem" every time I brew and I want an answer dammit.

How the hell do you get your tubing completely dry? I'm talking about things like your racking cane tubing? I push hot water and sanitizer through them when I am done with them and then hang them up but they never seem to get 100% dry. There's always some droplets in the line and they don't seem to go away.

I'm not concerned about the tubing on my immersion chiller since that water never touches the beer/wort, but the tubing on my racking cane is another story. The last thing to go through there is sanitizer, and it's the first thing to go through again before I use it again but I'd like to see it 100% dry after I use it.

So, let's hear it. How do you get your dry?

I make pretend it's Wonder Woman's lasso and twirl it out on the deck from each end, then drape it over the kitchen cabinet door for a few days. Mine is the tubing I use from the LBK to the bottling bucket.

Same with my 1 gallon water bottles after I brew beer. Shake them out and then let them sit for a few days.

Yup....I spin the hell out of them too. It's the best way I can get them dried out.

In the summer time, it's not problem......I put it outside and in 5 minutes it's as dry as can be but other times I do the lasso method too as well as hang them in the closet to air dry.

Hmm, I've been hanging them and still end up with some moisture in there. Maybe I'll try the lasso thing.
It's also 100 today so maybe a few minutes on the deck will help. I was hoping to not have to expose it to outside air/contaminants but maybe that is the way to go.

My short hoses are easy as I blow them out with CO2 but it doesn't work with the long ones.

So Im not the only one that takes the hose outside after a cleaning and a spray of starsan and lasso it around like a fool?

I then hang it from the front of my brewing rig.

You could move to Utah, Nevada, Most of Colorado or California.

I never have any problem getting anything completely dry.

Hahaha Brian - I'm actually in California and it's 100 today. I think I'm overly worried about getting it 100% dry thinking that something could grow in my racking tube and infect a batch when I transfer it but it hasn't happened in the past 4-5 years so I don't know why I'm concerned about it now, really.

But look what I learned - the lasso method is the preferred method on the Borg!

Seriously though, I really don't worry about it...

I put my siphons and thiefs away vertically while wet in an open top cardboard box and they dry over time.

The hoses get a quick shake, and get put away...

No, seriously...

I just make sure to sanitize before use.

Never thought about this one before, I wash/rinse, stow in my storage area in the garage. Everything is dry by the next time I want to use them. Sanitize before using.
