Bad night

So, some of you have "met" my 13-year old Ryley. She's had a tough go the last few years, having a brain tumor that made her blind in one eye, a tumor through the wall of her other eyeball, and several malignant but early mast cell rumors removed. Through it all, she has actually become much less timid, and seems to enjoy herself more than she ever did before. And God miraculously restored her vision and the vets said they'd never seen anything like it before.

So last night I woke to a thump. After I found the light, I saw her on the floor having a seizure. It seemed to last forever. When she came out of it she couldn't move her back legs for 5-10 minutes then was pretty uncoordinated for awhile. Of course I was very upset. You know your best friend is a true one when you call her at 4:30 am and she comes right over. We took her to the vet at 8am and they couldn't find anything in her blood work to explain it. Sometimes it happens, I guess. I had a dog before Ryley that had seizures as she got older but they were usually brief, and related to environmental/emotional stimulation, like if she got excited. Ryley has been subdued and thirsty but no more seizures, at least since I got home from work. She didn't want her supper but chowed down on my pizza crusts.

Just hoping for some rest. For both of us. And I have to make a decision about the new puppy tomorrow, I think.

Sorry for Ryley's rough night alb. It's never easy to watch your best friend go through that.
Glad she enjoyed her pizza crust. Hope you both have a better night tonight.

Sorry to hear alb! Only thing I can offer is advise from experience. My wife's family had a golden that regularly had seizures from the age of 6 until her death around 14. What you described is very accurate to what happened with her. The seizure would last for 10-20 seconds which felt like an eternity. Than she would be dazed and confused for several minutes afterwards with it being difficult to walk for up to 30 minutes. Than she would be very thirsty and tired for a while. She seemed to live life normally otherwise. Fortunately she didn't have the other complications your pup has but just so you know, the seizures can be managed with medication and a good eye to notice when there is an issue. Love helps too which I'm sure you give plenty of!! Good luck! I'll pray for some good health soon!

Ps, a new puppy in the family rejuvenated her for several years in to her teens! Hopefully the same can happen for yours!

I can relate to what D Rabbit says; our little Westie came from a neighbor who also had a Springer and he had seizures just like that. The vets couldn't figure out (or wouldn't say) why.

He was so back to his old personable self afterwards that Mom scratched her head.


He was older (12ish) when the Big One happened. She called me over and I put his head in my lap and it was very, very hot so we put an ice pack on his forehead while we waited for her daughter to arrive for the trip to the emergency vet.

I mention it because the vet said it was the right thing to do at the time so you know if it happens again.

I hope things are better now too. One thing that I think I do need to mention - if the seizures continue, be careful around other dogs. I've seen other dogs react very badly to a dog in a seizure. Don't want bad to go to worse.
