I hate dry hopping
I just tapped my IPA today. The one that I dry hopped. And sure enough, I have a lot of hop matter in it. I am hoping it will settle out or all of it will come out in the first few pours.
Re: I hate dry hopping
It usually takes me 2 pours and I'm good. My beer isn't really very clear until about 7-10 days in the keg then it's crystal clear when I use a yeast like 001 or 05. But I cold crash and that helps me bring over less hop funk into the keg.

Re: I hate dry hopping
I've been so happy with my hop stands (with lid on pot) that I have rarely been dry hopping lately. Maybe that would work out for you as well. Hop crud gets left in the fermenter mostly.
Re: I hate dry hopping
I normally do hop stands. But in this case I forgot to put some hops in during the boil so I dry hopped in addition to my hop stand. I have found that I get as much aroma from a hop stand as I get dry hopping without the hassle of hops in my fermenter or my kegs or bottles.
Re: I hate dry hopping
Do you cold crash before kegging? My Ipa's are mostly pretty clear...cold crash, gelatin and a week of carbonating and they are awesome!

It is difficult to cold crash a 10 gallon conical
Hop stands work the best for me I was just reminded of that with this beer.

Hey Stink, what are your experience with gelatin? I've used it a couple of times with excellent results in clarity but believe that it stripped some flavor and aroma. Do you adjust recipes for that or have you not had the same experience?Stinkfist wrote:Do you cold crash before kegging? Re: I hate dry hopping
I have been adding aroma hops to the kettle at flameout for some time and have not dry hopped in quite a while. When you dry hopped did you put the hops in a muslin bag, a fine mesh bag or just toss them in?Gymrat wrote:It is difficult to cold crash a 10 gallon conical

I didn't have a bag so I tossed them in.ScrewyBrewer wrote:I have been adding aroma hops to the kettle at flameout for some time and have not dry hopped in quite a while. Re: I hate dry hopping
I usually just toss mine in too (pellets) and then cold crash without much hop material making it to the keg. However, I will be dry hopping in a week or so with whole hops. This will be the first time using whole hops, so I am thinking about using a muslin bag. Not sure if I should weight the bag or if they will sink on their own.Gymrat wrote:I didn't have a bag so I tossed them in.ScrewyBrewer wrote:I have been adding aroma hops to the kettle at flameout for some time and have not dry hopped in quite a while. Re: I hate dry hopping
It can't hurt to add some stainless steel hardware in with the hops to weigh them down.

Re: I hate dry hopping
I use a ss mesh screen over my keg dip tubes and they work pretty well when going commando with pellet hops. I will say that I only use 2.5 gal kegs and my dry hopping is usually less than an ounce.
Re: I hate dry hopping
I actually own some stainless steel hardware due to posts you did sometime back. But I didn't have any sacks so they didn't do me any goodScrewyBrewer wrote:It can't hurt to add some stainless steel hardware in with the hops to weigh them down.

I use gelatin on any beer you can see through and love the results. I haven't really noticed much difference, though without doing a split batch not sure how you could be so sure it was the gelatin causing the drop in flavor or aroma. Someone should do that and a triangle test to see if they notice a difference. But as you said if you notice a difference it is pretty easy to adjust.

You mean like this?
I've read this and used it myself....just wondering what your observations were. I think I need to adjust my hop schedule a bit when I plan on using it again.
