Oktoberfest (a little late)
I know. Late in the year for this one, but so what. Morebeer oopsied my order by leaving me minus a lb of Pilsner, but at the same time accidentally gave me a bag of bottle cap (I dont bottle). Anyway, I have an extra 1/2 lb of Munich on hand. This isn't the inteneded recipe, but it'll do.

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Is one of your 20 minute additions not a 20 minute addition? Or is it a different hop? (seems to be a duplicate)
Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Same hop
Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Why is it listed as 2 different additions instead of 1oz @20? (just trying to understand what I might be missing).
Recipe sounds great to me regardless.

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
I did a very similar recipe Pudge, looks like Jamil's from BCS? It came out nice, if I could do one thing over I would have mashed higher instead of the 150* I did. I have used only the Bohemian Lager yeast for my lagers and from experience it leaves a lot of body and mouthfeel for the beer, so in an effort not to overdo that I mashed lower but this is one beer I should have mashed warmer like the 154* you have listed. I fixed some of that when I bottled up nearly a case of it lastnight and added some Calcium Chloride to each bottle.
But like Mashani mentioned, what's going on with .5 oz Hallertau and .5 oz Hallertau at 20 min?

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Nope, no super secret brewing magic. I based this off of Jamil's in BCS. Morebeer boogered the grain bill a bit and I switched the bittering to Magnum. I normally use Magnum in my lagers. Jamil had a 1/2 oz 20 min addition. I have an ounce on hand and just decided to be different willy-nilly. 10 min or 20 min... 6 of one, half dozen the other.
Mashing right now and already second guessing using that other 1/2 oz at all.

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Put it in, by the time it lagers a lot of it will mellow out. Especially if you have the malt backbone and body upfront.

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Oh crap, I just now read my original post. It should say .5 at 20 min and .5 at 10 min.
Also, I missed high and doughed in at 156. That is probably a good mistake. I tend to over attenuated.

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Thats what I figured it was a split between 10 and 20 min. But people have posted stranger things.
I wonder what cuases your consistant over attenuation?

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
It's a good problem to have. Just one I need to remind myself to compensate for.
I 'think' it's a combination of... always using Wyeast nutrient, always holding a solid fermentation temp (chest freezer/digital controller), aerating well, and not using an airlock. That last beer (Munich Helles) had a 48 hr lag time and still chewed down lower than expected. Keep the yeast happy and they'll do amazing things.

Did you hit your OG? How did the brew session go? Getting back in the saddle buddy.

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
LOL...
Missed my mash temp high and missed my OG low... 1.054. All in all I think it'll still be a good beer. My missed numbers are still pretty good for the style.

Something tells me a Bock will be up next?

Re: Oktoberfest (a little late)
Yeah, just about time for a ReBock. I really like that beer. I want to do one more smaller lager after the Oktoberfest though to keep growing up that Wyeast 2206. This yeast cake will be split 2-3 ways and cleaned up a bit. Maybe I can keep it going a few months.
Lagers and malt in general are underrated. I can always break out the hoppier stuff towards spring. Hell, I can buy IPAs everywhere. Not a good lager in sight. They aren't what the cool kids drink.
