Review: Bullis Brewhouse Sting Ray IPA

Post by philm00x »

Sorry, Bret, but I don't know the full name of this beer, just that it was labeled SRI on the bottle. To the borg, from the information I was given about this beer, it is an IPA brewed with Falconer's Flight hops.

EDIT: The title of this has been updated with the name of the beer, Sting Ray IPA.

Tonight is pizza night, and we bought some pizza dough from Publix, so we made pizza pockets instead of a traditional pie. Mine were ham and pineapple filled, so I decided to have this beer with dinner because I thought it would accentuate the pineapple, and it did!

Out of the bottle poured a copper colored brew with a very fluffy, pale white head. A bit hazy, but I expect that from homebrew, and I honestly like it because it shows it was made with TLC in someone's home. I brought the glass to my face so as I could take a big whiff of the beer. Fantastic citrus, mango aroma that I have come to love from Falconer's Flight hops. The flavor was admittedly strong at the first sip. I'm still not used to heavily hopped beers, so the first sip is always a little harsh on my taste buds, so my overall impression of taste is something I always measure on 2nd and 3rd sips. That said, the beer has a little bite to it, but was mostly citrusy in flavor, like grapefruit, and the malt was overshadowed but I picked it up at the back. It wasn't overly fizzy, which helped smooth the flavor. It was particularly delicious when I took a bite of my pizza pocket with bits of pineapple, and then washed it down w/ the beer, because the pineapple's flavor was increased with it. Almost like when you add salt to food to enhance its flavor.

The lacing was AWESOME. It cloaked the inside of the glass so nicely after drinking.

The SRI stands for String Ray IPA (Most of my brews are named after sharks or rays). I don't know if you noticed or not but there was a hint of Cayenne in it. It did not come out too strong in that batch. I am hoping the next one has a bit more of a bite. I am glad you enjoyed it.

I noticed a little bit of a spice note, but not much in the way of heat. More like coriander.

No shortage of head forming/retaining ingredients there! No wonder it was so fluffy!

I'm curious how the cayenne pepper affects the flavor. Like I said, it wasn't so noticeable in the one I drank. The hops overpowered it.

I originally did this recipe with smoked jalapenos added in the steep and it was really nice. I have not been able to get up to my friends to get him to smoke me some more peppers. So I have been trying it with Cayenne to get a bit of heat but it really has not worked as well as the whole peppers. I think the heaver spice notes are really good in this beer I am hoping the 1/2 tsp will get a bit more of what I am looking for. If it does you will have a package in about a month.
