Dogfish Head show That's Odd, Let's Drink It

Post by duff »

Did anybody watch the fist episode of Dogfish Head's new show That's Odd, Let's Drink It?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtebEPLzsKk

I thought it was a neat concept but I was disappointing in the lack of showing the brewing process.

Yeah I was going to post it! I have a buddy who was there and said the beer was phenomenal. I am super jealous! I love the concept. Sam has always been and will always be my idol.

Kinda cool, but would have liked to have seen more of the brewing process, that is what I liked about the show Beer Geeks. Michael Ferguson got a little more into the whole process.

I watched the episode at Avery today. Good show. I remember seeing something about it before but being unable to get it because the channel wasn't available in my area.

My sister sent me a link to the video on Facebook. My thoughts:

They're not going to show the process so much because let's face it, the brewing process is as exciting to most people as waiting to see a glacier move. They're editing and marketing to a certain audience, and it's not homebrewers.

I like the idea of re-assiging the use of expired ingredients to reduce waste. It doesn't matter to me if they use it in a beer recipe or in a soup stock. Throwing out less-than-perfect food that can still be useful is just a sin.

I didn't notice that Mario was plastered, but I'll take another look at it. He may be a little "happy" but it would take a lot to reduce my respect for him. He's a culinary master.

Sam Calagione is someone who brings out mixed feelings in me. I admire him for his innovation and drive, and he makes some damn good beer. But I also see him as something of an opportunist along the lines of "no publicity is bad publicity," and if he can get his name and product out there, he'll do it. I've seen his historic/artisinal beers, and even had the chance to try some, thanks to a gift. I wouldn't spend the money on a pomegranate/raisin ale, myself. I attribute this to not being in his target demographic, and that's okay, too. He's got a good thing going, and I wish him the best.

The above statement sort of ties in to the initial observation on the process. It's all about marketing, and both Dogfish and the producers of this show seem to be targeting the young hipster market; people who want organic/recycled/undiscovered/avant-garde/socially conscious ways of doing things. Okay, that's cool, and if they produced a good beer (regardless of their process or ingredients), that's what matters.
