Life has gotten in the way

Post by FedoraDave »

This weekend is the second Saturday in a row that I have to work. It happens sometimes, and while I don't like working Saturdays at all, much less two in a row, it's what I've been doing for 20 years, so I just roll with it.

I had planned on getting everything done as efficiently as possible, then running out to the LHBS and buying the ingredients I need to brew on Sunday, and for next week's planned batch, too. But when I got a look at my workload, I realized it just wasn't going to happen. I'll probably be working an 8-hour day (at least), and after that, I won't feel like driving 45 minutes one way to get to the store, and then 45 minutes back home.

At first I was angry about it, but then I came to realize that maybe it's not such a bad thing after all. I don't have to brew every Sunday, even though I try to, and even though I enjoy the diversion and the activity. But I don't have to, and maybe, since my schedule has been so hectic and active at work, it's better if I take Sunday and don't do anything. Having a day of complete idleness might be what I need. I'll do stuff, like probably go out and get a haircut, which I really need. And get a new propane tank for the gas grill. And I've got a fiver cold crashing that I'm going to keg. But the point is, I'm not planning on doing any of this at any specific time. And not having an agenda may be the curative I need.

So I'm pushing back the brew schedule a week. Even the hobby that we love has to take a backseat sometimes.

Yup, you have to balance out that work and play stuff. Suck, but often times that means work.

I have 14 clock in days left. Then I will be able to brew whenever I want to.

I have family obligations this weekend so I won't be brewing until next Saturday. But I will be able to grab an hour here and there to plan a new recipe, catch up on reading or to straighten up the brewroom. I'd rather not brew, if I don't have 6 hours to devote to just brewing. For me feeling rushed or not quite into it on brewday is like wishing for bad things to happen to yourself.

Way to go Roger! Party at Roger's house. :hammer:  :hammer:
I'm sure Ralph won't mind.

I'm having trouble finding time to brew. 2 of the last 3 brew days have been ones I took off to brew and that's not something I can do often. Sundays are for football right now so that doesn't always work for me and that leaves Saturdays which seems to be filled with all the things you couldn't get done during the work week. But, that just makes the brew day more special I guess.

Glad to hear that your brew schedule is pushed back by your choice; not by a catastrophe.

I got home a little after 3:30, and I could have made a run to the LHBS. But I'd already made my peace with it, and it's not just today; it's also tomorrow, and even next week.

I just need the rest. I just gotta recharge the batteries.
