19 oz of hops?
That 5 gallon kit will probably leave you with 2 gallons of beer too.

It is actually a 6 gallon kit they say to make up for the gallon loss from the hops!
And 3 hop shots? Palate fatigue has to set in by the end of the first pint!

Its funny that I really don't like very hot food (I like spicy and flavorful) but I like really hoppy beer. But not hops for the bite.....to me the key is hoppy FLAVOR. Anyone can make a hoppy/bite beer but to make a hoppy flavorful beer is harder to do. Pliny, to my buds, isn't overly bitter at all and is a rainbow of flavors.

I started making 6 gallons of beer instead of 5 years ago because of the loss of beer to my hoppage.

FWIW. Each Hop Shot is 5 ml, equal to 50 IBU in 1.050 wort @ 60, (10 IBU per ml). Could not find the calculated IBU for this recipe but it has to be over 175 IBU!
From the recipe instructions:

BOIL ADDITIONS & TIMES
0.5 oz Amarillo
FWH—add to boil kettle as wort drains from mash tun
15 mL (5 mL x3) Hopshot (90 min)
1.5 oz Columbus (45 min)
2 oz Simcoe (20 min)
1 lb Corn Sugar (0 min late addition)
HOP STAND
Turn off heat, add Flame Out Hops.
Allow to stand for 10–15 min before chilling
2 oz Centennial (0 min—Flame Out)
4 oz Simcoe (0 min—Flame Out)
DRY HOPS
Add the dry hops in two different stages.
Dry Hops #1:
Add 10–14 days before bottling
2 oz Columbus, 1.5 oz Centennial, 2 oz Simcoe
Dry Hops #2:
Add 4–5 days before bottling
1.5 oz Columbus, 1 oz Simcoe, 0.5
oz Centennial, 0.5 oz Amarillo

I've tried adding dry hops more than 7 days and I've found it adds nothing at all and likely, makes things worse. If I'm doing a 2 dry hop I go 5 and 3 days. If only 1, I go 5 days. This gets more more aroma though I'm not sure about any increase in flavor.
IMO, 14 days is way too long even if you remove them but I go commando mostly so I then do a cold crash.
This recipe and name is trying to match Pliny the Elder and I think I read that Vinny worked with Northern Brewer on this recipe though I'm not sure.

Way past Pliny, did a quick work up of the recipe on Brewers Friend from recipe instruction sheet and comes out at 350 IBU!!! Already sold out both kits, it wasn't an hour ago.

This is a Pliney the Younger style cloneish beer, not Pliney the Elder. As in a double imperial IPA or triple IPA... Or whatever you call something that stupid. (I don't know, I'd never brew a 10%+ IPA, it defeats the purpose of "drink young and enjoy fresh" to put that in my pipeline - if I bought a kit like this it would be with a 20% off coupon, so I could repurpose the ingredients and turn it into 4 or 5 other 2.5 gallon beers).

But really, the hops are actually not too much for that particular beer clone. The hops shots just keep you from having to use even more hops LOL. Look up Pliney the Younger clone recipes, you will see...

Any theoretical IBUs over around 100 and it just doesn't matter anymore, so it's all just flavor/aroma at that point.

I'm with you, Chris. The only time I worry about my tastebuds being zapped is to determine what beers I'm going to have AFTER said zapping.

Well, there is probably around $70 in hops and hop shots alone. Have to think if you can really brew it any cheaper yourself?

I did a Pliney Clone twice and I think I used a full pound of hops in a 5 gal batch. To be honnest, it was quite balanced, almost sweet even...could have used some Gypsum maybe.
