So... I decided to give this another shot. 12/25 version.

So, it's still as far as I'm concerned, "meh". Yeah it tastes good and smells good. But it's also 9.4% abv. I can taste the alcohol. I can *feel* it burning on the way down my esophagus and burn my nose... It's not like a big 9% well aged Belgian which you don't even notice the alcohol until you fall on your face. I can *tell* it is there.

Where my 6ish% all late addition homebrew IPAs can have this much flavor when fresh, and I can drink more of them and enjoy them more. I don't see the point of the 9.4% abv just to cover up the traditional bittering addition's bitterness. Just get rid of that addition - with this much hops, it is totally unnecessary, and is literally preventing me from enjoying this beer as much as I'd like to if that's the reason they have to put so much malt and/or sugar into it to "balance" it. To me it is *preventing* this beer from seeming balanced, in that it is annoying and ruining what would be a really good beer otherwise. I'd vote for getting rid of that/those additions and pushing the hops all late if that's the reason. (I don't know if that's the reason, but I can't think of any other one that would make it necessary).

What is pliney, 7%? So why does this need to be 9.4% and taste like alcohol? What is the point? It is *not* so much better then anything else that I've ever had that I see it.

That's my nay-sayers opinion. You can hate on me all you like, but that's honesty what I think. And my favorite beer on the planet is 10% abv. I don't drink a lot of it because of that, but when I do I enjoy it immensely. So don't think I'm just bitching about that for the hell of it. I'm just glad I only got a 12oz bottle and didn't pay for one of the big ones.

I definitely see your point mashani but I think they do it because they can.......and can charge more for it. I have to admit the awesomeness is wearing off on me after so many versions. I don't buy as much as I use to but I do like that they have it in 12 oz bottles now. And most of what I brew is 6%-6.5% though I don't always get the balance I want from mine.

And, hate you? For your opinion? This isn't Congress where opinions separate us, that's what makes this forum so great! Opinions are what bring us together.

Now that you mention it mashani, this one did seem "richer" and a bit "hot" to me. I drank a bomber of it on Friday night and thought it was different than the 10.31.15 release - a lot different.

I agree that it doesn't NEED to be that high, but it is a DIPA. I'm finding that I'm hit and miss with the releases this year. I also like the fact that they put them in 12oz bottles now as it's easy to split a 6er with a friend. And a that high of an ABV, 12oz is much better for me than 22oz.

I'd argue that 9.4% is pushing 3xIPA levels of alcohol, not 2xIPA. So it should have more hops, or less booze if they want to make me a happy camper LOL.

I wouldn't disagree with you. As I look at my comments about most Stone beers I find that I comment that most are "too much" for my tastes.

Enjoy By 1/1/16 Black IPA.
This is really good. It's not as bitter as the normal Enjoy By line, but it's got a nice bite, flavor and aroma for a black IPA. It doesn't really taste roasty either, but the dark malts are definitely balancing out the hops a bit. It's a good beer. I would probably buy this again if they do another one.

I picked up some some "Enjoy By 12.25.15" today. It was on sale since it is after 12/25, I guess. I am finding it a nice IPA. I'll mention that there is not an IPA on earth that I would want to drink all the time, but there are a number of them I find really good when I feel like an IPA.

I see mashani mentioned earlier that he noticed the "alcohol" in it. I assume he means the "hot alcohol" flavor of a young strong beer (or mead). Sipping my "slightly expired" 12/25 I have a nice hop flavor and bitterness and do not notice any "hot alcohol", although it may be subdued enough the hop flavor covers it now.

So yeah, there is a balance between hops and malt and aging. After I finish my 3rd glass of this it is probably time for bed.

I picked up a bottle of 4.20.16 last night that was bottled on 3.14.16. Wow, super fresh. Now, I need to drink it!

I drank the 4.20 last night and it was "ok". It was definitely fresh, but I could also pick up the alcohol a bit in both the aroma and taste where in *some* earlier releases it's much less pronounced.

I'm not sure if it was the beer or whether my palette has adjusted more to other beers recently, though. So, I did enjoy it but I didn't love it this time around.

I like that I can pick up a single 12oz bottle these days and not either a whole 6-pack or even a bomber.

Hmmm... A little over a week old...

For as much as one wants to drink these as fresh as possible for maximum hop experience...

I think one must also consider the need for the beers ingredients to 'come together' during that first couple of weeks post bottling.

I'm willing to bet that in even another week it will be a better beer.

You need to go get another one and test my theory! :muahaha:

The one thing we don't know is how long the beer may have been held in a bright tank prior to bottling. It may have had time to "come together" prior to bottling.

True, but maybe not for long... Business being what it is...

Heck, it might be filtered (although I don't think it is) which would mean it wouldn't change much short of hop diminishment...

But I'm guessing there's a haste to get it to their respective markets... Sooner on the west coast than on the east coast although probably by only a few days...

And another week or even two might help... Don't know...

I have never had two bottles of Enjoy By that were compared in this way... Yeah... I usually drink them both on the same day when I have them...
