You mean you haven't done that yet?? I thought we've all made some type of Frankenbeer at some point now.
I just did this again 2 months ago to avoid having to toss anything and it made a pretty tasty IPA.

Re: Save the hops!
Oh, I've made Frankenbeers (or would the proper spelling be "Frankenbiers?") from extra extracts and specialty grains I've had lying around, but not with hops. I swear, if/when I do, it's gonna be one weird-ass beer. I could probably get two or three batches out of all the extra stuff I've got in the freezer.

Gotcha. I was lucky when I did this one that the hops were all of similar (IPA) style. I didn't have anything odd to throw in that didn't play well together.

Re: Save the hops!
Yeah, I may have to separate the milder stuff, like Fuggle and Saaz and Tettnang from the more aggressive, West Coast stuff before I start throwing things together.

Re: Save the hops!
You don't need to separate Fuggles or EKG. Both of them play nice with 'Merican hops.
I have a really yummy Fuggles + Mosaic ESB in my pipeline. Drank some of that last night. They play really nice together. And EKG as a finishing hop is always nice. Styrian Goldings I know also play nice with piney or citrusy American hops as I've done that.
That said, I've not tried it with German hops or Saaz.

Re: Save the hops!
Adding Saaz as a flavor addition with a 'C' hop, and using 'C' hops for Aroma lends a kind of nice spicy german beer like element. Works pretty well.
Go easy though or it will stick out in the mix.

This is extremely good information to know. Thanks for sharing.BigPapaG wrote:Adding Saaz as a flavor addition with a 'C' hop, and using 'C' hops for Aroma lends a kind of nice spicy german beer like element. Works pretty well.

And I'm extremely gratified that this thread has turned into a kind of seminar on hops usage. This is really great!

I only ever use whole ounce increments in my five gallon batches any more.

Re: Save the hops!
I try to, Tom, but it doesn't always work out that way. I also do 2.5 gallon batches, and that can throw things off, too. I tend to monkey around with my hops amounts on BrewToad when I'm formulating a recipe, because I'd like to keep things within the style ranges. It usually works out, but I still have all these bits and pieces left over.Tabasco wrote:I only ever use whole ounce increments in my five gallon batches any more.

Yah, 2.5 gal batches I'd use 1/2 oz amouts ... just haven't done one in quite a while. I plan on getting the LBK's out again, though.FedoraDave wrote:I try to, Tom, but it doesn't always work out that way. I also do 2.5 gallon batches, and that can throw things off, too.
