Apple Ale

Post by berryman »

With a little more time on my hands now I 'm trying some new things to brew. I did a apple ale 12/28/15, 8 days ago, a Midwest extract kit http://www.midwestsupplies.com/apple-ale-kit.html used Wyeast 4766 Cider Yeast. I didn't take a SG reading because I knew the number wouldn't mean much as I only had 3.5 in the fermenter and added another 1.5 gal of fresh cider 3 days later. I racked today and took a reading and to my surprise it was 1.045...........umm that wouldn't have been far from the OG. I always rack in 8-10 days and I know when to do it. I tasted the sample and it wasn't sweet like I thought it would be with the high number.................Here's my question, I pulled the hydro sample off the bottom and seen a lot of trub in the tube after, will that give me a false reading...I plan on secondary for a few more weeks anyway.................Thoughts..........

How much trub was in the fermenter? It does seem odd.
