Didn't really know where to post this about fermentation

Post by Whamolagan »

I ferment in a sabco fermentor that is basically a 15.5 gallon keg with a removable lid with a valve on it. The valve is where I attach my blow off tube. So yesterday I brewed and got the wort in the fermentor, pitched the yeast. I set the temp where I wanted, and walked away. I got home from work today and couldn't hear any bubbling from the blow off into the blow off container, and wondered why my fermentation had not started yet. I opened the ferm chamber and low and behold my dumb ass didn't open the valve and had built up pretty good pressure. I released the pressure and it is chugging along as far as I know, but I am worried that I may have compromised the yeast. Any thoughts?

I doubt you did any harm. My thought is Relax, don't worry, have a home brew.

I don't really know, but thinking through it all, I don't really see how that could have had any effect on the yeast. Especially since it was chugging when you released the pressure. That tells me that everything is going just fine.

It had only been 24 hours, but there seemed to be a lot of pressure. As for the homebrew I am way on that. I was just worried that I may have introduced co2 too quickly, but it seems to be cooking right along

If anything perhaps slightly less ester production. 0 pressure fermentations (open) produce the most esters as far as I know. (it works for me). Any extra dissolved CO2 should dissipate back to whatever it would have been normally, as it can only stay in solution in greater quantities under pressure.

That batch is completely buggered. The only thing you can do is let it sit there for about two weeks, bottle it up, and then send it to me for proper disposal. Nothing more can be done. Sorry for your loss.

Considering yeast have the ability to explode a glass bottle during carbonation, I doubt you hurt the yeast much if at all. Head pressure does affect how they ferment though. I gave up airlocks long ago and use a very loose aluminum foil cap on my carboy and have had to adjust my brews for higher attenuation rates than Wyeast lists for most strains.

Somewhat goes hand in hand with another thread here about how much CO2 is produced but I found this article about spunding valves.

Nice system. Mine got buggered during the move. will miss it. As far as the discount, I think that had to be applied BEFORE the purchase. I'm sure someone of knowledge on this site will chime in and explain it.

@ captnfbomb (Stephen):

Welcome aBorg!

For the BD Discount, it goes like this...

All you need to do is create an account on BrewDemon.com (if you havent already) and enter the Promotional Code: WEHAVEBEER

Once you have entered the code everything you order will receive the BeerBorg Discount. Not just this time but every time you place an order.

Please read below from BrewDemon for specific directions on how to become part of this group.

"To join this group you must create an account by selecting "create an account" at the top of our home page. Then at the top of the registration page there will be a box to enter your Promotional Code…complete the form and click continue. That's it, you're all logged in. And once you are logged in, you should see the special BeerBorg pricing.

Unfortunately, there is no place to add this Promo code if you are already a customer (we are working on this). But until then, if you already have an account, email customer service or send me (BrewDemon) a private message (with your email address) and I will move you into this group."
