unclaimed property

Post by bpgreen »

On another forum, somebody posted a suggestion to check state sites for unclaimed property. My first reaction (and post) was pretty astonished. How do you end up with money that you're owed, but you don't know about it? The guy who started the thread admitted he didn't know and somebody posted a link to a site that aggregates a bunch of state sites. I checked and I'm owed some money.

All I know is that it's more than $100. 20 years ago or so, I signed up for some site that was supposedly giving away shares in exchange for email addresses. It didn't take long for me to decide it was a scam and just redirect their emails to trash. But they apparently not only issues stock, but when they were bought out, they sent money to the various states' unclaimed property repositories.

Some 15 or 20 years ago I checked into that. It must have been more than 20 years ago because Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet. Anyway I found out the state owed me $46 for some reason. I had to jump through a ton of hoops to get it. It did take a long time but by golly I got that $46.

Hey, thanks for the link! I have 2! One for an old credit union account while I was a grad student in Texas ($38), and one for Travelzoo.com from 2013 for stocks/bonds ($137). Travelzoo?!?!? I don’t remember any dealings with them whatsoever. But I’ll take it.

Well, nothing for me
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

Many states have their own sites. Check for them first, the aggregator site is capturing your data...

Process is long and you have to prove you're you via their process.

I always find it amazing that people leave bak accounts, etc. Some are balanced owed from companies like Lands' End, LL Bean, etc.
I have over 9,000 posts on "another forum", which means absolutely nothing. Mr. Beer January 2014 Brewer of the Month with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it...
