Maris Otter Extract

Post by braukasper »

I have 2 3.3 lb cans of Maris Otter Extract. Does anyone know the values to use in BeerSmith?
I have been blessed with an abundance of brewing related gifts.
think my family is trying to give me a hint!

In your case 3.3 Lbs of LME equivalent would be 4.4 lbs of grain.

Grain to LME: lbs grain x .75 = lbs LME
Grain to DME: lbs grain x .6 = lbs DME
LME to Grain: lbs LME / .75 = lbs Grain
DME to Grain: lbs DME / .6 = lbs Grain
LME to DME: lbs LME x .8 = lbs DME
DME to LME: lbs DME x 1.25 = lbs LME

And that's when it was fresh. If it's in a "jug" from Northern Brewer, then it's the same stuff as above and probably was fresh when you got it.

But if it's really in a can (Muntons, etc.), then the stuff isn't going to be so fresh, so it's going to be darker and a bit less fermentable.

Also, some of the canned stuff isn't 100% Maris Otter, some of it is a 60/40 or something along those lines blend of Maris Otter and some other base malt.

If it is in a can, and you want it to ferment out and turn out a bit lighter like fresher stuff, I'd replace something else in your grain bill with anywhere from 3-4oz of dextrose or table sugar. Or add the sugar and increase your volume a little bit.
