Brewdemon - Yeast or something in Airlock

Post by txagsbas23 »

I am using a Brewdemon conical fermenter with an airlock for the 1st time. We brewed an octoberfest on Tuesday night. All went well and we had activity in the airlock the next day. I went to check the batch last night and found something that looked like yeast or yeast/wort in the airlock. The fermenter has been untouched or bothered since it was placed on the shelf on Tuesday. Anyone else see a issue like this before? Do i remove the airlock and replace?

Thanks!

Might have had a little bit of blowout into your airlock. A pic would help, but my guess is that it might be okay. Check to see if there is any airlock activity. Only remove it as a last resort.

Yep, sounds like a pretty active fermentation. How high is/was the krausen in the conical? Won't hurt to take the airlock out, clean it, sanitize it and put it back. Make sure you also clean and sanitize around the hole the airlock fits in. You can always lay a piece of sanitized plastic wrap over the whole while you are cleaning the airlock. Personally, I would rather clean it than have the potential for the crud to get infected and pulled back into the fermenter.
