Keg rotation - going well

Have a question on how to keg your beer or just want some tips on bottling! Don't stick a cork in it until you ask the Borg!

Keg rotation - going well

Post by FedoraDave »

While I've been pleased with my decision to get a small keglet and have it in the rotation, my goal has always been to have three 5g kegs full, so I can tap two of them and have one on standby. I'll have achieved that by the end of the month. I'm currently drawing from a keg of South Ferry Steam Beer; I hooked up the Pearly Pils last weekend (it's been lagering for about three months); and next weekend I'll be kegging the Rye-Guy Rye IPA. I don't know how long this arrangement will last, because I'll be filling growlers with the South Ferry and the Pearly Pils for a family party on May 1, so that will deplete both somewhat (and, as mentioned, I'm already drinking the South Ferry). But having no interruption in both taps is extremely satisfying.

Oh, sure, rub it in. While my taps are getting dusty, Dave is swimming in beer. :)
How big is your keglet? I started with two 2.5s, and still use them for specialty brews.

Good for you Dave. My brewing and drinking are both erratic so I don't have that system in place. I find that I either have a lot ready, or not enough. But I live in the land of so many options that it's easy for me to supplement with a great 6-pack if needed.

Congrats on nailing your timing.

I usually try to have a number on standby for times when I won't have a chance to brew. I think I got up to 8 at one point last year, then got busy and I think at one point I only had one on tap and one ready to go. I've got 4 on standby now and one batch fermenting. That may have to hold me for a while.

I have been trying to have beer in all 6 of my kegs at the same time. Efforts have not been going well.

I have 6 kegs too, with 2 taps. I have not yet achieved full capacity, as I've always had an empty. I've hit five full, but never six.

I have 9 on tap and pouring, with room for 15. I'm slacking, I know.

The keglet probably has a 3-gallon capacity. I use them for my 2.5g batches, which is actually 2/3 of my output. I'm still bottling a number of the small batches as a result, but I've been collecting bomber bottles, so it's a faster process.

I cleaned out the keglet (which went toes up earlier in the week) today. And then I turned around the kegged the PacTiki Pale Ale. Since I want to have the space for kegging the fiver of Rye-Guy Rye IPA next weekend, I charged the keglet for a minute or two at 30 psi. Then I had a brainstorm (which may actually prove I have a brain). Instead of just taking it downstairs and letting it sit at basement temps (i.e. around 64 degrees), why not put it in the lager fridge and set the Johnson Controller at 38 degrees to encourage CO2 absorption?

Anyway, I'm not likely to tap this for another four weeks, at least, but it's set up and working for me.

Well, this discussion and my other thread about not enough beer, gave me an idea. My next batch of Belgian Pale should be 7.5 gallons. Five will go in one keg, 2.5 in a short. One brew, two kegs. When my shoulder is fully recovered, I may do some ten gallon batches to fill two kegs at once. I only have a ten gallon pot, but I've made five gallons in a five gallon pot, I can make ten in a ten. Or get another burner and have two pots going at once!

That's the spirit, John! I'm glad I provided inspiration. Take care of that wing, though; you don't want to extend the healing process.

I've been keeping 2 beers going in the kegerator with the 3rd tap dispensing sparkling water, which I love in the summer. In the fall I'll put a cider into the rotation. Right now I've got the tail ends of my Easter Blonde and Nzed Pils pouring, with Spittin' Image (Two-Hearted clone) almost ready, and Tropic Torpedo on the way.
