In Celebration Of All Who Have Served

Post by ScrewyBrewer »

It's worth remembering that Memorial Day only came into existence in 1971, when it was first declared to be a Federal holiday and moved to the last Monday in May. Until then ever since the end of the Civil War, American's had honored their fallen soldiers on what was known as Decoration Day and was celebrated each year on May 30th.

As a kid growing up in Elizabeth NJ, just a few short blocks from a US Naval Reserve base, I still remember hearing the roar and clanking noises made by a column of US Army tanks parading down Fourth Avenue. The wide treads of the heavy tanks left deep ruts in the middle of the street. The ruts were there in the pavement for years after the parade had ended and served as a constant reminder of that day.

The fun we have today at our cookouts, barbecues and picnics may not even have been possible if it weren't for the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served our country in order to preserve our freedom. The real meaning of this day should be remembered and shared with the kids, so they too understand that others have sacrificed so much so that we can enjoy this day.

Here's to a very safe and very happy holiday weekend, let's lift a glass in honor of all who are or who have served! :flag: :flag: :clink:

Couldn't have said it better. We are who we are because others have made the ultimate sacrifice just so that we can have the freedoms we have. Never forget!

How eloquent, Vince. Beautifully put.

I always remember the immortal words of Lincoln at Gettysburg, referring to those who gave "the last full measure of devotion." A sobering thought. These valiant men and women deserve our thanks for their sacrifice.

Yes...to those who gave their life and freedom so that we can have both.

I had the HONOR and PRIVILEGE to spend a weekend a few weeks ago with a war buddy of my deceased father in law....he's 93 and the stories he told gave me chills, laughter and tears. I honestly know I could NEVER have done what he did.

Salute to those who gave their all.
