Gelatin: Yes, it works

Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
Gelatin works incredibly well and fast. But I agree, I have noticed less hop character when using it in hoppy beers. I think it can be compensated with recipe but it does seem to make a difference. There are only certain styles I see fitting for gelatin. Its a tool I like to use when I want a beer done fast instead of waiting say a month for cold conditioning. I have used gelatin for beers for parties on batches that I knew would be gone fast. Kolsch, lagers, light Ales would all be good candidates for gelatin.

Well, I've got some Knox gelatin on the shelf and I just kegged my Masa Harina Cream Ale on Sunday night...I think I know what I'm doing to it before work!
If all goes well, it'll be carbed and clear enough to drink starting tomorrow after work.

Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
I personally gave up on it though I only tried it twice. It's just not for me. I'll keep my slightly cloudy beer thank you.

I mostly don't mind cloudy beer, but for a cream ale or a lager--it'd be nice to have an easy way to speed up some clarity.Beer-lord wrote:I personally gave up on it though I only tried it twice. It's just not for me. I'll keep my slightly cloudy beer thank you.
Because I'm for damn sure not waiting 3 weeks in the keg! I don't have that kind of patience (or the pipeline built up to support that kind of patience)! So I'm giving it a try on this beer, and I'll try it on my Munich Dunkle that's fermenting away after I keg it up (which will be a week from Sunday).
Like many have said, it's another tool in our belt that we can use or not--whatever helps us make the beer we want in the time frame we want it is a good thing!

I have often wanted to try Clarity Ferm but never have.
The Brulosopher has an Exbeeriment about it vs. gelatin. http://brulosophy.com/2015/07/27/clarit ... t-results/

Like most of y'all, I'm not too particular about how clear or opaque my homebrew is. But since starting to work at the brewery, I feel I need to practice at home.

Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
I've used Clarity Ferm once on my Four Point Pale Ale recipe. But I used it to reduce the gluten for my wife. I think it did make it a tad clearer and I don't think it really effected the beer at all. And it did reduce the gluten. My wife was able to drink one with no ill effects. Too bad she said it was too hoppy for her. No biggie....I drank the rest!!

So you've already kegged it and have been carbing it for several days and you're going to use gelatin to clear it up now?Jon wrote:Well, I've got some Knox gelatin on the shelf and I just kegged my Masa Harina Cream Ale on Sunday night...I think I know what I'm doing to it before work!

Please let us know how that works. I've never used gelatin, because I'm usually happy enough with the clarity of my beers (but I've got enough of a pipeline that a beer is usually in the keg a month or more before being tapped).
But I always thought the gelatin went in early in the process. And I've always kept my kegs sealed once they're filled.
Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
So it was kegged on Sunday and put in the kegerator, but I was out of CO2. Monday it got hooked up to CO2, Tuesday I turned off the CO2, purged the keg, added gelatin, sealed it back up and turned the CO2 back on. So it had 1 day under high pressure, but gelatin should work at any time, as long as it's cold.bpgreen wrote:So you've already kegged it and have been carbing it for several days and you're going to use gelatin to clear it up now?Jon wrote:Well, I've got some Knox gelatin on the shelf and I just kegged my Masa Harina Cream Ale on Sunday night...I think I know what I'm doing to it before work!

Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
That's what I've read, too. I've read about many people that weren't happy with the clarity in their beer post-kegging and tapping that then went to gelatin without issue.Jon wrote:...but gelatin should work at any time, as long as it's cold.

This is good info. I've never really had a problem with clarity, and I brew and drink my own beers, so I probably wouldn't care, but if I had to do something where presentation matters, it's nice to know the options.
Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
Agreed. I got a wild hair up my ass to play with it again a while ago and will likely use it again for my Kolsch and any lighter beer I brew.
Or, if I really have trouble with a cloudy beer that is bugging me. It's very flexible in terms of where/how it is used, too.

Re: Gelatin: Yes, it works
I added the gelatin to my Citra blonde this afternoon via the Brulosophy method after it cold crashed for about 30 hours. I poured a sample in a shot glass prior to adding gelatin, to makes sure that the only cloudiness I could see was from chill haze and not from yeast/hop matter. Can't wait to see what happens!

So I was bottling Etcitra, Etcitra and couldn't help but notice the bottling wand. The beer coming through was crystal clear! This stuff really does work!
