Re: The Hydra
I already do that for much of the year when I get it down to 110 or so. But, I may try using only ice in the future but am curious to see how it does with our hot, summer ground water.Whamolagan wrote:I could imagine running a pump in an ice bathe would chill wort super quick
Gonna keep my old one for a bit but my asst. brewer may get a hand-me-down.

Re: The Hydra
Can use to old one as a pre-chiller once it gets down to 90-100. Hook it to the hose ahead of the Hydra and set that up in the ice. Water hose to old IC that is in a bucket of ice, out of the old IC to the Hydra.

I've tried this with my current chiller and a smaller version but the pump in an ice chest works much better for me.

Re: The Hydra
Looks like it should get it down pretty fast. I have one of the small chillers, but my water, winter/summer runs 50-52 degrees. I can pitch pretty fast.

I had to finish some beer today so that I can likely brew this coming Saturday. Yea, a serious problem, I know.
But I hope to be able to brew this weekend and will post my opinions then.
Stay tuned!

I'm sure you'll be able to make it through this, adapt and overcome and all that. Looking forward to your review of the Hydra.

Re: The Hydra
Here's my stats from my first use of the Hydra. Ground water was 81. I did a 20 minute whirlpool hopstand so by the time I was ready to chill, it was down to 188. It took 6 minutes to get it down to 99. I then hooked up the pump with 20 lbs of ice (I usually use 40) and then realized the pump could barely pump water thru all the rings in this thing. I may need a stronger one. But, it still got it to 75 in 11 minutes and 64 in 19 minutes. Half the time it normally takes me.
And, here's the kicker, due to my false bottom which is about 2" high, the Hydra was only submerged 2/3's into the water. Had I had a narrower pot and/or no false bottom, I'm sure I could have shaved a good 5 minutes off the time.
Color me very pleased!
